Towing lights on a Toad

We recently purchased a tow dolly so we can bring our Mini Cooper with us on the road. The question I have is does anyone suggest that lights be added to the rear of your toad. Allowing additional lighting for tail lights stop and turn signals?
Thanks!

This is what I use. It works well, and is easy to set up each trip. Although it is a bit pricy, its probably not that bad when you consider what you will spend to have someone install wiring and diodes etc to use the existing lights.

I just added this to my new Chevy Spark. Easy install, doesn't require cutting into the factory wiring, no diodes and being LED very bright.

I wired my Camry for lights.. I have a female 4-flat connector under the hood, its wired into the Camry's running and turn signal lights..

I then made a "Y" cable for my dolly. It plugs into the MH, then the "Y" part plugs into the dolly and also the Camry. Both the dolly and Camry lights now work

I do not use any

My dolly has lights and I rarely drive in the dark. Some states may require extra lights but not sure which states. I have been through 26 states and never had any problems.

This is what I use, from Harbor Freight for around 10 bucks. I run the wire through the car and out the bottom of the passenger door to a plug I installed on the dolly at that location.
While the dolly has bright LED lights of it's own I find these magnetic lights are more visible further back and up high.
These have amber lights facing forward which are handy to let you see that the lights are working and show side street traffic see the where the end of your rig is in the dark.

I use the same magnetic lights with a Y connector for my Mini on the dolly. Works great!

Y Connector

JCF what type of Y Connector are you using on the Flat 4? I tow a Mini on a dolly and the new lights are LED's and bright. Would consider adding the extra for safety if Y connector fairly simple. Thanks

I use one that a local trailer shop made me - they should also be able to do it at your RV dealer. Mine is a standard round 7 plug round that goes into the rig, coming out are 2 4 wire flat plugs - plug the dolly into one leg, the cord from the tow lights on the car into the other and you are good to go.

Thanks

Thanks J for the reply. After last message I found a Y connector on Amazon for about $10 and its on it way. Will try the Harbor Freight lights in conjunction with my Acme Tow Dolly and report back. I try now to be out at night but added visibility during the day is a good thing. Happy motoring.

Hey FordFixer, if you're still around.... yes the dolly has lights but they are not at the rear of the vehicle you are towing. We dolly towed for 2 years with magnetic lights on the rear. Unfortunately, if someone were to "rear end" you and you just had dolly lights..... and lawyers get involved, well, we didn't want to give them something like this to use against us.

Wyoming; A motor vehicle which is greater than 50 inches in width, trailer, semitrailer, pole trailer or any other vehicle which is being drawn at the end of a combination of vehicles, shall be equipped with at least 2 tail lamps mounted on the rear; either as a part of the tail lamps or separately, 2 or more red reflectors; 2 or more stop lamps; and electrical flashing turn lamps.

Others have different opinions based on their experience, but we have always tried to CYA (assets of course)
