This place blows me away sometimes. The culture sucks. You'd think the average RV owner is the equivalent of the crusty old curmudgeon who yells at everyone to get off their lawn.
...that made me chuckle...
I bought my diesel Class C (used) in Tucson in 2013, and flew down from Canada to pick it up. I had driven it a total of one mile to get some fuel, and another RV owner at the gas station (older, crusty) came over to me at the pump, put his hands on his hips, stood defiantly, and said something like "you diesel guys think you're so smart don't ya"...

That was my welcome to the RV world...but I soon got over that puzzler, and realized he was small minority...and have loved RV'ing ever since...

I started RVing knowing that MPG was going down the tubes and that would simply be part of total expense. In the big picture, after paying for the RV cost, insurance, maintenance, upgrades, campground fees, etc. a couple mpg differences does not show up except several decimal places in the total cost of ownership per mile.

Bottom line, bigger the house you take rolling along with you on the road the more it will cost. If you great mpg, just park the rig and don't move it.

We have a 2005 Winnebago Aspect 26A with 98,000 on the clock. We tow a 2012 Subaru Impreza, a very light car.
We average about 8.5 towing and 9.5-10 without tow. Best I ever got was 10.4 on a flat run with a wicked tailwind. Always use Mobil 1 synthetic.
I do not exceed 65mph, ever. Gas mileage tanks exponentially beyond 65.
The OP's numbers do not seem out of line to me.

When I first bought my RV (which is my first), I was horrified by the lousy gas mileage.

Then I started reading the forums, and found out I actually do better than most people would expect

I have a 1990 29' Rexhall Airex with a Ford 460 V8 and 240,000 miles. (I know.... You rarely see that sort of mileage on an RV!)

I get right around 7.8 on mostly freeway driving, cruise usually set to 60. No toad.

I’m about 8. Once or twice got 9 with a tailwind. Seven w a headwind or going over 65. Currently at 30,000 miles. Dry 5,200 kg.

Toad does not seem to affect it. Certainly less than one mpg. Cherokee.

2018 Leprechaun 260 DS. Tires at 80.

I did a little better w my 1985 Winnebago w Ford 460. Drove it 100,000 miles. 21 ft w no slides, so probably at least 1,000 kg less. No toad but towed large boat. About 9 w boat, 10 without.

I’m retired. I’m on vacation. I have no worries. The less I think the better off I am. I calculate my mileage like this. When the tank is empty I fill it. Then I head out on my next adventure. Stress out over important things.

Similar mpg to someone’s class C I use to camp with. Not having the class A flat front end really helps at the pump.

I feel calculating MPG is always great to do, not because of counting pennies at every fill up, but you know when/if there is a issue with the engine. If there is a issue that arises which affects fuel economy, you will know about the issue immediately vs waiting for something major to happen.

Sorry dude, not buying the "I bought this thing believing all the pro-FordTritonV10 forum posts, and can't believe how bad the fuel economy actually is" propaganda.
He's reporting on a 22-foot without a toad driving 62 to 64 mph. I've got a 30' that usually pulls a RAV4, and I tend to cruise at 68 mph. I'm getting low 8s and have seen 9.75 with a tailwind. Average for the 20,000 miles I've owned it has been 8.1. That's every mile I've driven it divided by every gallon of gas I've put in it.

Toad is 2010 Equinox and vehicle weight is 14700. Average about 7 last 6000 miles and see little difference driving 70 as opposed to 62. My trips have had a lot to elevation change.

Burning a higher octane than required will never improve mileage. This is because all octanes have the same energy per unit volume. Inherit errors in calculating mileage over a few tanks of gas may give a false indication of improved mileage. Using a higher octane than required is a waste of money.

I'm jealous. That's all I have to say about it.

2006 Winnebago 29R (30') with 3-Valve & 5 speed. 18K chassis, towing 2011 JK Sahara. Average is 6.5 mpg. Drive slow too.

But, when the wife has a sudden urge to use the bathroom, I'm not diving for the shoulder or a pulloff while she skedaddles to the camper in back. Since she's happier, I am too - by default (or decree?).
