In my short time having an RV, I'd say a ladder is absolutely necessary. I am very attentive and regularly conduct preventative maintenance on the roof. This include adding dicor to the sun beaten old sealant to prevent water leaks. Once you have a water stain on your ceiling, I'd imagine it's very hard to remove and also decreases an opportunity to sell your rig in the future. When looking at used rvs, I always walked away from rigs which had water stains on the roof which the owner said was "fixed".

A collapsable ladder is what I carry and it saved me this summer. Our slide out awning got ripped off by a headwind on 94 westbound in 101 degree heat. I was only doing 60 but into a 40 knot headwind it got under the rolled up awning and launched it up and came crashing down on the roof. The only way to continue was to get on the roof and cut the awning free. You never know when you will have to do something you never expected. PS- when the awning came crashing down on the roof it took out the front A/C, cracked covers on the mid and rear A/C and also took out the TV dish. I'm 70 but at least with the ladder I was able to get up there and get it off and continue down the road. Not much fun at 101 degrees but without a ladder, impossible. jmo mark

While we are on the subject of being on a roof I would like to add something.
I never walk on my roof with street shoes on. Instead I have a pair of slightly used sneakers I keep stored in a plastic grocery bag with a length of parachute cord attached to the bag. When I plan on going up on the roof I attach the line to my belt, climb up the ladder and turn and sit when I reach the roof. Then I pull the bag up and change into the sneakers. I keep the soles of these sneakers clean so I know as I walk around I am not scratching the roof with something stuck in the soles of my shoes which may damage the roof surface.
The extra two or three minutes to do this is no inconvenience compared to repairing damage which can be easily prevented.
When I am ready to come down I change the sneakers for my street shoes, place them back into the bag and lower the bag to the ground before climbing down.
