Why No Class C's on Cab-Over-Engine Cab/Chassis?

They are common in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and even Asia...Why not in North America?

We rented a Pensky box truck with a Mitsubishi chassis. It was smooth, comfortable, and got GREAT mileage with a 3 point something Liter turbo Diesel.

These mid-sized COE Trucks are available in North America and come in every size from 1/2 ton to Class 6...from Fuso, Mitubishi, Ford, Chevy, Mack and more...

From Mild...

For one thing, most of the COE type chassis the cab flips forward to do engine service. If the engine is far enough back, then you still have access issues trying to get to it through the floor or from underneath. The only way a flip-forward cab could work is with no overcab bunk area.

I do agree there seems some possibility though.

I would have to think that, at least, some of the engine box is in the living area. Remember the old flat front Vans ?

That would block access from the drivers area to the house but make a great step up to the cabover bunk.

Why No Class C's on Cab-Over-Engine Cab/Chassis?

There are some C's on a cabover now made in the US. EarthCruiser is an example. There is one of their vehicles parked next to mine in the covered storage yard. It is built on the Mitsubishi Fuso Diesel 4x4 chassis. They are built in Bend, Oregon. http://earthcruiser.comClick image for larger version

I've always wondered how they perform any major engine service on those European/Australian Class Cs.
