Announcements have been posted on volunteer.gov for volunteer positions on the Outerbanks, if interested.
Includes:
Cape Hatteras Light Station
Wright Brothers National Memorial
Fort Raleigh National Historic Site
Bodie Light Station
Ocracoke Campground & Vistors Center
We had such a great experience at the Lighthouse, just thought others might be interested. Park Rangers are very appreciative of the contributions of Volunteers. I would return in half a heartbeat if back East.
If interested, suggest inquiries be made about the RV Volunteer Sites at each location. Although we did not personally check out each locations RV Sites (except the lighthouse, which are great), other volunteers we worked with indicated that the Fort Raleigh RV Volunteer Sites are a little close together.
I recorded specific information about the Lighthouse work requirements, site, communications, as well as pictures on VOLCONUS.
PM any questions, if interested.
Have Fun!

Can't wait to get 'full time', so we can take advantage of some of these opportunities.

Just curious . . . it will be several years for us also before we can go full time.
I followed your link and found:
Housing: Volunteer RV hook-ups within the park may be available, which include electric, water, sewer, and laundry in exchange for commitment of 30 hrs per week for 6 weeks minimum.
Can a couple split that and work 15 hours each or some other combination to get to the 30 hours?
Are there any tax implications in this (like do they 1099 you for the value of the "housing")?
Thanks!

Click on the blogspot below for the RV Site amenities for the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.
Each locations RV Hookups can vary. That should be one of your questions. I use a brief cover letter outlining my interest in the volunteer position, and indicate my minimum requirements for an RV Site. When I am contacted, I confirm that a site is available along with the site amenities.
I won't accept a position without electric, water, sewer, because it would be a pain to deal with over a 3-4 month period.

Again, each site can have different requirements, and they may have flexibility in those requirements. I have outlined the work requirements on www.volunteerconus.blogspot.com below.
We are at Ft. Sumter group now, and a couple splits the 32 hour weekly requirment. I usually work more than the 16 hours here, because of the historical experience, and have a lot of flexibility in what I do and where I go for the hours over the 16 scheduled. They will even assign me to areas I prefer if I let them know.
I have also outlined the hour requirements for the Ft. Sumter Group on the webstie below. I don't have any ads on the blog,,,it is just for fun and hopefully provides info to others about experiences I have a each location where we volunteer.

No tax issues that I Know of as it is all volunteer, no irs forms issued. There is an irs reference for this issue, but don't recall where to find it right now.
Also, covered by workmen's comp in case of an on-duty accident. Protected by tort claims provision in performance of duties if working within the scope of those duties, which is the same for all Federal Employees.
Thanks!

Hope this info helped.
I have gotten far more in return for volunteer service, than given. To me it is an experience.
I am almost to the point of volunteering specifically for the NPS, as after 2 locations, it is extremely enjoyable and rewarding.
Also on the below blog I have listed some of the other benefits received at each location. Some of them are really financially rewarding as well. Went to the SC Aquarium yesterday, Ft Sumter, and the Military Museum on the reciprocal volunteer pass, and the total cost would have been about $88 to visit those attractions alone.
Good Luck

I didn't get started until 10 years after retirement....I could kick myself, now it's makeup time.......It is so enjoyable....Tried a job after retiring,,,,,no fun at all......
This fits me well....It is nice to pick and choose where to go, and with over 390 National Parks,,,,,got a lot of time to make up for.
Have fun
