You might say we are bewildered, stumped, wondering what is going on out there in Workamper Land. We know the face of workamping is changing - but is this the way for it to change?
We placed an ad in Workamper News as we have for many years. This year the responses have us wondering - What's going on?
We have had a few responses. We have contacted all of them. Some did not meet our criteria. The ones that we felt were a good fit for our business, we offered jobs. Verbally -on the phone- they accepted. We sent out our contract (which just verifies what was offered - hours, pay, etc) via email. We gave them a deadline to get the contract back to us. 5 days later no response that they have: 1: received the contract 2: have questions or 3: changed their mind. We call the phone numbers given and leave messages. No return calls. We did receive an email from one for us to call them. We left a message on that number for them to call us. They have still not returned that call.
And then there are the ones who after applying to us, do not return our call to interview them.
So what is going on? Why would a workamper accept on the phone and then not contact us after a contract has been sent? Why would someone apply and then not return calls for an interview. Does anyone have any ideas? Are workampers not as serious about the jobs as the employers are?
We are still trying to hire workers, but the season will start soon and we may start without the help we need.
Just wondering and thanks for listening.

mpj I can not speak for those workampers that applied to you but as a new subscriber to Workamper I can tell you that I would always reply back to a employer whether I still wanted the position or not, just common courtesy. Something like not burning your bridges behind you
What positions do you have open?

We are looking for a couple who will work 15 hours for site, with addtional 15 hours paid. Office is computerized and restroom and pool cleaning are involved.
I do not feel comfortable disgusting $ amount on forum. Is there a way you can email me or I can email you?

mpj,
I am not sure what the change is, but I do know the owner here is having similar problems. In the past She would get lots of response, and this year it was very little. I realize that being in the city of STL isn't as attractive to a lot of people but I don't understand this years response being so poor. Maybe less people are traveling because of concerns of the economic situation or fuel cost?

Supply and demand.
A lot of your Workampers are staying home or close to home due to the economy and cost of gas. To travel several hundred or a thousand + miles to work for site only or site cost and short weeky hours is not very attactive to most at this time. Some of your bigger campgrounds are now starting to pay more with free site and the smaller ones is starting to scramble for workers that is left. All the years of workamping, my emails and phone calls wanting workampers have never been this great. The best so far, which I took was $10 hour all hours paid, 35 hours week with a free site, electric and cable which I never would have dreamed of years before. I am not saying you need to match this but just let you know what you are going against. The last few months most was $7 to $8 hours, all hours paid with free site and the electric was about 50/50 being paid or not.
To answer your question, they are getting better offers! Maybe you should look into changing to a better offer, free site and/or more paid work hours.
PS. Just so you know, the campgrounds with good offers are not posting, they are reveiwing resumes and calling or emailing the workamper with the offer. I have even been getting phone calls on the weekends the last few weeks.

We, on the other hand have applied as a work kamper with several different places and have had no response from them at all. We have no way of knowing if they have rec'd our resume and of course, everyone being busy we hate to bother them. We are new RVers, however, both of us have had professional jobs, no experience in the "RV" world~~and if we do not have that exoerience how do we get it??? I too would appreciate follow up

If you don't belong to www.workamper.com you should, more so if you are new and just getting started. They will be coming out with their next month book listing hundreds of jobs for this summer. Also, they are listing several jobs a day on their hotlist. If you know computers, there are a lot of jobs for that and any campground needs housekeeping if you just want to get started and work on starting your workamper resume.

I agree with Paul and Sue as far as belonging to Workamper. We will be going to Maine this spring for our first workamper experience. I posted a resume on the KOA website and last count was 7 phone calls from everywhere from Washington State to Maine to Texas. Good Luck the jobs are out there.
