Time off while workkamping?

For all of you who workkamp - while you are in a position for a certain length of time, has it ever happened where you needed to fly back home for any reason? We will be full timers early this summer. Would love to try workkamping but have 4 children & 4 grandchildren here in RI. What if for some reason we needed to come home for a few days. Has that situation happened to anyone when they are workkamping?

If there was something special going on, I would tell them at the start of the season, that we will be going home for x amount of days and most people are good with that as long as they know in advance. If an emergency comes up, you do what you have to do and the campground works around it. It does happen alot and most campgrounds are understanding. In our case, the campgound wants us to arrive April 15. Our grandson has something special going on and we can't leave until the 17th. They were willing to wait on us to get there.
Congratulations on your retirement.

Had several things pop up over the years. However, we were always able to manage it during our days off or switching with other workers.

We volunteer at a NWR, not work camping. Most of the volunteers took a week off either at Christmas or other times. As long as we notify our supervisor in advance, none of us had a problem getting the time off. Good communication works!

It is pretty much like any other job: Cut your deal going in. I you anticipate needing to go home at such and such time, tell them in writing at the start.

If you need to be"on call" for emergencies, work it out in the beginning. Employers and Volunteer supervisors are all alike, they don't like surprises.
If you have expectations, let them know and work it out.
