Workamping

Newbie question about workamping. What do you find is the minimum time commitment employers will take? For instance, will some folks allow you to work for just one month?

I only have two years doing this so what i have seen is very limited.

It seems like for workkamping ( you get paid) they want a longer commitment like at least half a season at min.

Volunteer gigs (some "work" in exchange for a free site) seem to be willing to have folks come and go for short stays like a 30 or 60 days.

There are some out there with short time frames. Just keep your eyes open. I would check WorkampingJobs.com - Free Job Listings from Campgrounds and RV Parks in the state you want to be in OR www.volunteer.gov (assuming you may want to volunteer). Join Workamper news and get the emails every day with the new listings.
One thing that a lot of people ignore is just to cold call campgrounds. We have been fulltime for 11 years and I've always found jobs on my own. We choose the area we want to be in, then cold call rv parks in the area or check websites for state parks. If you can't find info on their websites I call or email the rangers. Sometimes parks lose hosts mid summer and are looking for short term people. There are other jobs that are short term like Pumpkin and Christmas tree lots, beet harvest in the northern states, wheat harvest in MT.

As FTer & WKer for 5 yrs, we've seen most want you for their particular "season". However, we've gotten plenty of offers for 1-3 months due to WKs having to leave early for whatever reason. It's rare to see a 1 month commitment unless a previous wire has had to leave.

We usually work the season as volunteers which in most summer positions is mid May to after Labor Day and can stretch into mid Oct. Winter volunteer positions are usually Jan- April but preference is given to those that can start earlier.

Our shortest volunteer positions were 6 weeks which worked for us and the FWS refuge that needed volunteers in the spring after their winter snowbird volunteers returned to the North another 6 weeks in the fall before the snowbirds returned. We had both summer and winter positions lined up so it worked for us.

We also did a half summer season in Alaska as they found it easier to get folks to do a half season after driving several thousand miles. You then had several weeks to explore the rest of the state either before your start or after.

I believe Oregon State Parks has a volunteer program that allows a volunteer to work at several parks over a season. Allowing a volunteer to explore different areas of the state. You can always go to any State park website and do a search for volunteers as they all use them.

Our preference is volunteering with FWS and have 7 refuges and thirteen seasons over the last 7 years. We'll be volunteering at our 8th refuge this winter. DW is a birder and that is what most refuges were setup for though they also attract and protect other wildlife.

All have provided a WES site and most provide washer/dryers and some provide propane depending on funding and location.

If your just looking for a paycheck Amazon hires workkampers at a few locations which may change year to year. A little late for this season but never too early check out for next year. Google "Amazon camperforce".
