Changing life styles, looking for budget parks

We are hoping to change lifestyle soon. We have been full timers for about 12 years now, but pretty much stationary in the San Antonio, Tx. area for the last 4 years (Medical).

We are ready to start traveling a bit more.

We have purchased a 2002 Holiday Rambler Imperial motor home, and plan on divesting ourselves of our "fleet". At one time, we had another motor home, a 5er, a TT, truck, car, and toys. We hope to be down to one motor home, and one toad. That will save a lot on registration, taxes, insurance, maintenance and storage.

Our income is close to $5,000.00, after taxes, and our only debt is a $400.00 payment on the motor home. We plan on buying a toad with the proceeds from selling the "fleet".

But, we would like to do a bit more traveling. We would like to stay South in Winter, and a bit further North in Summer. I think our ideal would be to stay at any given park for 30 days at a time, and then move on down the road. We have kids in Georgia, Colorado, Hawaii, and Texas. (won't be doing much RVing to Hawaii).

We are looking for smaller parks, maybe less than 100 sites. We don't use pools, gyms, golf courses, or the like, so rather not pay for them. Also, we would like to keep the rates we pay to under $400.00 a month.

We would like to keep fuel costs to a minimum by making relatively short hops between parks.

We no longer have expensive taste, but do dine out maybe once a week, and like to see some of the "local sites", if they are not to expensive.

I don't think work camping will work for us, and will probably need to be within reasonable distance from a VA Hospital.

So, why am I saying all this? I am hoping to maybe bounce some ideas off the good folks here, and of course, get some ideas and information that will help us do it better, and cheaper.

We use the internet a LOT when looking for campgrounds. We joined the Moose, VFW and Eagles before we started full time. Some of them have small campgrounds. Here again, you can find them on the internet. Check county fair grounds. They also often have cheap sites that are empty except for events, but may be time limited. When you are traveling, Passport America is the best deal, I think. But there are a lot of restrictions. Travel during the week and plan on staying just one night. We can still work camp, so we have a free site and usually stay 3 months at a time. We have been on the road for 3 years on a $2000/month income. It is doable and a bunch of fun.

(By the way, we are currently volunteering at Garner State Park, about 80 miles from you. We plan on going to the San Antonio zoo this weekend.)

Planning on going to Garner late winter early spring. They always seem to be booked when I go to the State Park Website. Is this so or can you get a reservation with little notice by calling. It is hard to plan my schedule months in advance. Thanks from Austin, JD

The park is closed now for a deer hunt and will re-open the 17th. It has not been full since we have been here (Oct 14/2014) except for weekends and only two or three of them. I do believe if you call you can get a site. It is a huge park with a lot of sites, but it is the busiest state park in Texas.
