KIA Van towing?

My wife & I have a 2012 KIA Van, 35,000 miles on it, with 3500 lb. towing capacity. We would like to get a Jayco 16MRB HUMMINGBIRD, (Dry weight 2800 lb.) or something like that.

We already have a class c hitch installed (for our boat). I would like to rise the back of the van up some for more clearance. The reason is that the hitch sometimes scrapes the ground. We have learned to be careful but this happens on some boat ramps and steep driveways with the boat attached.

So the question is can we raise the back up a few inches and/or HOW?

PS: please don't tell us to get a another vehicle as at this time we can not afford that. We plan a long trip this summer and/or a few short trips.

Many people use air bags to help level out the tow vehicle with a trailer attached. There might be springs available that could change the ride height while towing, but they would probably have the rear end riding higher when not loaded.

Next time you have the boat loaded up and everything else you take with you at those times, go to a scale at a truck stop if you can and get the axle weights for the van and trailer, and then drop the boat trailer and get a reweigh with just the van. That will help you figure out how much weight the boat is putting on your van and if it's too much.

What is the weight carrying capacity for your tires? It's on the sidewall with the words "MAX INFLATION" or similar nearby.

I had a Toyota Sienna van and loved it, it too had a 3500lbs towing capacity. It was very common to add in coil air bags to the rear of the van to help when towing. The best part of the air bags is when you weren't towing you could let the air out of the bags and have a very smooth ride.
