My husband tripped across www.theepicenter.com and found plans on making his own generator. He had a Honda motor from a broken pressure washer from work, made his own bracket, hooked up the recommended car amp and pulley, wired as directed, and voila! Generator for under $100.00. Of course if you must purchase a motor it would be higher. It's pretty quiet, kicks out plenty of amps for our needs boondocking, and with a new muffler will be quieter still! It recharges our battery bank on idle.

I've been wanting to build one of these for years. I've got the motor from a pressure washer on it's stand & my brother races stock cars so he's got plenty of alternators. I'm just too cheap to spring for a decent battery, converter and put together my own brackets.

Here's another site that has instructions on making 110 volts come out of the alternator instead of using a DC -> AC converter http://www.1stconnect.com/anozira/Si...alternator.htm , it looks like the same one for sale on theepicenter.com.

One of these days...
