Sounds like you need some local information. Tennessee only allows two hour stops maximum unless you are a trucker. The rest areas around Chattanooga are small and frequently fill up. And yes, the rules are enforced.
That being said, if you are coming down I-24, get off at Exit 152 (Kimball/South Pittsburg) and head to the Walmart. They welcome truckers and RVers. We stayed there ourselves when we made the move to TN. The Walmart is open 24 hours, as is the McDonalds and the Waffle House, and the Cracker Barrel opens early for a great breakfast.
Kimball is only 25 miles away from Chattanooga.

When I hit rest areas (never had a problem with police in any state), I was ways prepared to say I'm so tired I knew I was too dangerous to drive. Is a cop really going to tell you to get on the the road after you told him you are too unsafe to drive? I think not.
Maybe some place, but do the highway patrol really have the time to check the time you arrived and how long you've actually been there? Again, I think not!

I think the rest areas are just being one step ahead of Wal Mart in that they post " No overnight parking" for the abusers. How else would they control it to keep RVers and even homeless people from living there. Put a 14 day limit?
I'm afraid abusers will ruin Wal Mart for RVers someday too.

I travel only about 300 a day, and then relax in a campground and have a nice dinner and visit with other campers. Its just a few bucks, aye?
I would feel a bit silly doing the same in a parking lot at 3pm. I also feel a bit vulnerable in a parking lot all night, so would not sleep worth a darn.
What is the attraction for you folks?

Someone may have suggested it already. But you should have the book "The Next Exit". It will tell you what is available that will accept RVs/Trucks.
Don't overlook Lowe's or Home Depot as an option. I have found Walmart to be too crowded at times and right next door I saw an almost empty lot at a Lowes or Home Depot. If you stop by 7 pm ask the manager about parking overnight. We've never been refused.

I stayed at a rest stop in KY bringing our coach home! Me and about 50 trucks. It was perfectly safe but a little noisy with the road so close. But when your tired it is easy to sleep!!! Good luck.

We can say what we think about things and hold any opinions we like. I posted a link above that includes a link to the DOT in TN and other states. TN says NO more than 2 hrs in a rest area as stated above. That is not the TN DOTs opinion. Colorado has a similar law - as I said before laws vary from state to state. What you decide to tell your mother when the cookie jar or lamp in the kitchen / living room are broken on the floor is your business.
Just what the OP needs - a 2 day death march and an readymade excuse for LOE when they wake him up and tell him to drive 5 miles down the road to Cracker Barrel or Wally World or a CG. Or maybe they won't - but that is the law in TN - at least for those who chose to follow it.
Can somebody please post a list of the laws we're supposed to follow and those that do apply to us.

One of the reasons for getting a fully self contained MH was so we could boondock. Not sure how much extra that cost us and it's still cheaper than an RV park. Don't need that ammenities when traveling so won't pay for them. That way I can fill my fuel tank more and swee more of the country.

Not to turn this into a self protection thread but I am one who has had to show I was ready to protect myself from two Spanish speaking gentlemen that decided my MH looked like easy pickings! It's not a myth, nor "good story" but the truth.

Bowser,
Thank you, yeah, it's not just the money, but I'm concerned about finding my way around a campground late at night. Don't want to disturb other campers either. Thanks again

There's nothing wrong with that and if you stopped at a rest stop for the night at 3PM, I would think someone may have a problem with that. And you are getting your moneys worth out of the campground. When I spend the night at a rest stop, I'm similar to most truck drivers; in between 10 Pm and midnight and gone by about 6 AM. I'm only there for a rest at the rest area. Not even worth getting out of the MH and plugging in and waking every body in the CG up.

Not sure why you want to put slides out if youre not staying for at least a day or longer. The hassle of pulling in/out of a campground is not worth the trouble for me.
Ive stopped at quite a few rest areas and stayed overnight and never been hassled.
