I just can't place my Grandkids in situations of even percieved risk. Peaceful sleep is to valuable to ME.
Besides, traveling 3 days vs 2 takes away the evening camping adventures that they love so much.
It is everybody tired and crabby, or refreshed and happy.
Each to their own.
Just sayin....

If we have to make time we try 3 hours on 3 hours off because that is comfy and fill the tank and strech so the other person gets 3 hours.

I don't think anyone mentioned 'Loves' truck stops. They allow RV over night parking. Not 100% sure of my plan but if I was in a hurry. Trying to do two 600 mile days I might just drive at night and sleep in the day. That for sure would be safer. I stayed in the rest stop on 26 between 77 and 95.
The reason I may drive at night when driving to Florida from Ohio if the landscape is kinda boring. Then during the day I can find a place at a rest stop easy. And lucky getting to Fl from Oh is not a long long trip.

Shellmound is a great campground, but the sites with hookups are frequently taken. Marion County Park is about the same distance from the interstate and does have hookups available generally.

don't know of its been mentioned but a lot of Cabellas have spots specifically for overnighters including hookups and even kennel for the dog. just call ahead to get permission. they are nationwide.

agree. when wife and I with dog moved from minnesota to texas we stopped every two hours to let the dog do his thing. it was good for us too. stopped overnight twice. will be doing the same with each trip in the motorhome when we get one. unless we decide to stay longer than overnight. I like to take it day by day and not get too married to a schedule. otherwise why even do it.

I have slept overnight at rest areas from Minnesota to Idaho many times in both my auto & RV, and have never had an issue.

Florida Department of Transportation rules state for their rest areas you cannot stay all night and you are allowed only 3 hours of rest. They state they have guards at all rest areas although I have only seen them at night.

Is that only for RV'ers or trucks too? The truckers have to stop after so many hours (12 now?) and stay off the road for at least 8 hours so how can they move after only three?

I guess they would have to stop somewhere else for the required 8 hours - or maybe they are allowed to sleep longer. I believe these days a company drivers every move is monitored so I don't think they can use the invisibility cloak.
Good question Mr D.

I found the information on a Florida DOT Internet site titled "Common Questions and Answers Concerning Florida's Rest Areas". They answer other concerns for motorhome owners with many applying to cars as well. I doubt this applies to trucks but their policy is mixed right in with answers to motorhomes.
This is the link. http://www.dot.state.fl.us/statemain...estAreaQA.shtm
