Parking for a few hour visit in a town
Was wondering of anyone's suggestions as to where to park in passing through a community that has an attraction that you would like to view. As we pull a 5'er, if we wanted to use the truck rather than Harley, where would you suggest parking. Generally, these places wouldn't be an overnight stop, but just for a few hours to see the sights, museum, or such. We want to make a small sign to hang on our door saying something to that effect and a phone number where we could be reached. Thanks for your input.

In smaller towns we can usually find a dirt lot adjacent to the truck stop or gas station where we can park the motorhome and drive the toad. On weekends we have parked next to or near city hall or in the high school parking lot for some quick touring. Most smaller Midwestern towns do not fence in these areas and there are usually picnics or other activities in the neighborhood. I have been known to wave down the local LEO (law enforcement officer) and ask for a place to park it for a while. In larger towns, Walmart, always out of the way far from shoppers parking.

Thanks for the parking infro.
Thanks all for the parking infro. Never thought of asking the local PD about parking. That's the last thing I would want or need is to come back to find out I was towed. Also, as sad as it is to think, a king pin lock is something I surely will purchase. We had also wondered about a church parking lot if not on a Sunday. As fun and carefree as traveling may sound, there are a ton of things to consider I see. The more I learn, the more questions I have. lol Again, Thanks All.

If you belong to any fraternal organizations (Moose-Elks- Eagles- VFW-American Legion), I have used their lots, not only for a day of sight-seeing, but often for overnight. Also, a good place to find local information and have a beer.

While going from one planned stop to another planned stop, if they are over a day apart, I'm one of those who starts the day with only about a 10% idea where I will be that night. By noon, I'll be at 50%. At 3:00, I'm at 75%. Never know for sure until it happens. Thus, I've stayed at Wally World, Cracker Barrel, Lowes, Rest Areas, Bingo Hall, VFW, Truck Stop, and church.
I always ask first. At church, I go to mass the next morning and again thank the priest for the kindness.

Any RV left unattended is really a target these days. More cities have ordnances prohibiting/controlling RV parking, so checking with police is good advice. I am sure I will be challenged on this statement, but I would never leave my RV parked unattended in a Wally World parking lot. Just quietly observe activities in one of these places for 30 minutes sometime and be your own judge. Their cameras are not much of a deterrent. We are camped in a southern state now and within the past 48 hours there was an RV stollen from a parking lot near our location.

American Legion, VFW, Eagles, etc. Even if not a member many will allow you to safely park for a few hours after explanation and request to do so. I have in the past for lack of safe place or unable to speak with owners etc. Gone to local Fire Department or Volunteer FD. They normally have parking space for a (unattended) rig.
Each case is different. Size of town, city, village.
Leaving an unattended trailer at Wal-Mart sure can irk allot of people.
Ever wonder how you can pull into a empty parking lot. Out where nobody ever just parks. Upon return you find that someone parked so close you where unable to maneuver.
Happy Trails
