Gillette Wyoming
Fourteen Ontario FCRV families made the trek west to attend the 2015 Campvention which was held in Gillette Wyoming. Most of the families travelled in small groups to and from Campvention and most took the opportunity to tour many of the tourist stops between Ontario and Gillette. Some of the popular stops included the Corn Palace in Mitchell South Dakota, the Badlands, Wall Drugs, Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, Crazy Horse monument, Deadwood and Devils Tower.
Many of us also took advantage of the “Region 3 Campout” held in Sturgis South Dakota which was scheduled for the four days leading up to Campvention. This gave us all a chance to recover from our long drive west, well in advance of our last half day trip into Gillette.
Gillette was the site of Campvention back in 2001, and since that time many new buildings have been added to the complex. Also every site had 50 amp power, water and sewer hook ups. All our indoor activities took place in air conditioned buildings which was great as it was hot.
We had all the traditional Campvention activities including the new very popular family day, nightly entertainment on the main stage, Teen Royalty pageant, hospitalities, seminars, sports competitions and a well attended Golf outing.
Ontario did very well at Campvention and came home with the following awards and recognition:
· International Teen Queen, Megan Douglas of Sarnia
· International Teen Pageant Miss Congeniality, Megan Douglas
· International Chapter of the Year, Tri County Travellers
· Wildlife Grant of $1,000 to Hobbitstee Wildlife Refuge
· Chapter Scrapbook Contest first place , Wandering Canadians of Cambridge
· FCRV National Scholarships, 3 Ontario winners
· CAMP Program individual Winners, Don and Diane Harris
· Third Place in the Teen Queen category of the FCRV parade.
· Acknowledgement that Ontario had collected over 700 pounds of pop tabs and the proceed were given to a the “Heads Up” program in Ontario
· Conservation Is poster winners
· Camping Is winners
We want to remind everyone that Megan Douglas is Ontario’s first International Teen Queen since Campvention was held at the same site back in 2001, when Diana Lidgey of Ontario won the crown. Guess this site is lucky for Ontario.
Campvention’s greatest benefit to our family has always been the opportunity to greet old friends whom we generally see only once a year at Campventions, as well as the opportunity to make many new friends. In Gillette this was definitely the case. Some of our touring and activities both before and after Campvention were enjoyed with old and new friends from all over the USA.
We want to remind all Ontario FCRV members that Campvention 2016 will be held in Shawnee Oklahoma, and it’s not too early to start planning on attending this Campvention. Please note that for this year Campvention will be held a week later due to scheduling conflicts with the facility. Check out on line at
