I was just curious to know what some of you preferred in the way of campsites? I have seen some campsites that are very open with hardly any trees and some that look just like a parking lot! Our favorite has to have trees around it and a little bit of privacy, maybe 15-20 feet to the next site over which usually belongs to good friends! Being close to a playground is a bonus for us as we and our friends all have young kids, and close to a lake is even better!!! Hook ups are always nice too but we can live without em for a few days anyways! Our favorite campground is only an hour out of town and has all of the above, I will be on the phone May 1st booking our sites! We generally go there 2 or 3 times a year.

I often enjoy a County Park over a private site. Sure the county parks can sometimes have tighter spots to get into, but often have more mature landscaping, do not have a store and a loudspeaker, and there is usually some nature orrientated literature or paths to take. Its more of a rowboat crowd as versus the speedboat crowd. (all of our local county parks are among our secret sites)

Our preferred sites are in the woods. The more trees the better. I have a 7 and 5 year old so we like to be close to the playground and swimming area but not so close that you are right on top of them. A good 5 to 10 min walk at 5yo speed is good for us.

TJ,

Have you been to Forest Hills Campground in Winchester, N.H?

We like sites, not always campground sites, on the water with access for a canoe, good sunsets and pretty much alone in that there will be trees between the sites.

Our FAVORITE campsites are the ones with trees, plenty of room between sites, polite fellow campers, and lots of quiet at night. On or near the water doesn't hurt, and darkness is a plus.

Do you remember when you needed a good flashlight to find your way around the campground after the sun went down? Now we often need to put foil over our windows to make it dark enough inside the trailer!

L8r,
Steve

I have to admit I am a little afraid of the dark when we are camping, I make hubby walk me to the "facilities" when it is really dark ( and hold the door open and hold the flashlight and check the building for mass murderers!) Hmmm, I guess I watched way too many Freddy and Jason movies as a young impressionable teenager!

I prefer the National Forest Campgrounds (especially if they are in Colorado), but I want the camp sites to be large enough so that I can get the 5er parked w/o hitting anyting. Some trees, but enough blue sky for the solar panles to work, and or course, the satellite TV to work. Near some water. Sometime I like to be way out in the boonies, sometimes near nice resturants. Favorite place for us is Peak One CG on Lake Dillon near Frisco CO. See pics at http://www.klenger.net/photo_album/peak_one/index.html

We've stayed at some really nice Corps of Engineers parks. Most of them are very spacious with large sites, good facilities, and are almost always near the water. Prices are very reasonable and with Golden Age or Golden Access, there's a 50% discount.

We started out tent camping 25 yrs ago and still think a "campground" should have lots of trees (our favourite campground at that time and the place we first met was a State Park in FL...our "dates" were camping trips). We currently camp in a vintage Apache pop-up with a dog, a cat and 2 teens and tend to stay in public campgrounds. We like the county parks (stayed in one the first of the month), State Parks (going to one this weekend), National Forests (all around us) and we have stayed in a couple COE campgrounds. We also like to "budget" camp and that tends to lean away from the private campgrounds.

We have only been once, since we spent all last summer remodeling and doing major overhaul of our camper, but we went to JFK Park in Heber Springs, AR, a Corps of Engineers park. It was shady and well maintained. Paved parking areas. The only complaint we had was that our neighbor used a dadburn LEAFBLOWER!!!!!! grrrrrrr, that is sure irritating at 7:30 in the am and 5pm. Not only did they blow off their space, but the neighbors too! Hey this is camping! I see talk and was asked if we had a Golden Age Passport and would like to know where to sign up for this.

I love the National and State forest campgrounds in upper Michigan. Good sized sites. Usually primitive facilities. With our new unit, I hope that we continue to use these rather than the parking lot campgrounds with the modern conveniences.

Favorite? Anyplace that the wife and I can get away to!! Trees, lake, friends, grandkids, kids are all nice to have along...sometimes! We both enjoy forest camping, do a little desert couple of times a year, but we tend to shy away from the large "privatly owned" (like Good Sams, KOA's) campgrounds..too many people and too close together.
