So, what does your family do around the campfire? We do the traditional s'mores making and storytelling/story reading, but the kids don't like singing much and roll their eyes at the adults when we break out in "song."
Do you have other campfire desserts or ways to engage all of the kids? Let's hear about 'em!

<span class="ev_code_PURPLE">In our family, it's the kids that break out in song. They especially like the c-a-m-p-f-i-r-e Spongebob song, lol. They also have a story game they like. One of them starts a story and we go around the circle, each adding 2-3 sentences. They usually end up very silly, which is the whole point for the kids.
The kids don't last long at the campfire once the songs/s=mores are gone. They would rather go play games, read or watch a little tv before bed. It's fine for me that way too, I get a little adult time. </span>

Our kids love making campfire "pies" with the cast iron pie makers.
I have a couple simple recipes on my web site.
The easiest is two pieces of buttered bread with a tablespoon of pie filling.
The kids also like to play flashlight tag at night (good for the older ones...)

We have a favorite game not sure if it has a name but here goes
things you will need string long enough to go around the fire and reach each person
and a large button ot washer
thread the string through the washer/button and tie the ends.
rules for play
one player is it and has to find the washer/button which is slide from hand to hand if they find the washer/button that person becomes it. is a lot of fun and usually the kids don't want to stop playing

Besides the Smores, when we have a bigger group it gets a little more interesting.
Everybody brings out whatever snacks they feel like, and start passing them around. Sometimes you're eating M&M's followed by chunks of cheese, then beef jerky, then crackers, then popcorn, then summer sausage then...
Especially in the dark, you never know what's going to be in you hand next. Usually it's something you would not have thought of yourself, but now you're happy to try it.
To entertain ourselves, if we are far enough from civilization we will lean back and try to spot shooting stars or satellites.

We had two great campfires this past weekend with our camping group at Darlington Provincial park, just east of Toronto.WE had about 15 families in attendance. We actually had some pie irons the first night, but the second night just conversation and watching a small skunk who was walking around just out of our reach. Great camping for Sept.
