Southern California

We are a family of 3 who just bought a 34 ft Class A. We live in Ventura County CA and are anxious to meet other families out and about!

Any recommendations for great RV parks on the coast?

Congrats on the purchase!

You've got a number of nearby campgrounds on the coast as you drive north on 101; I think a lot of it is personal preference.

Since we live in the Bay Area, we tend to come down to just Pismo Beach; normally, we stay in the dry camping North Beach state park because we've found it's the most open, and it's close enough to the pier/downtown itself that you can walk in and pick up any odds and ends you need (not that I have ever accidently spilt a gallon of milk down the sink. Nope. Not me. )

During the summer you have to book months ahead of time, so we generally avoid the area, but outside May-September you can pretty much always find a space (except Thanksgiving weekend) and at 25 bucks a night it's reasonable.

Above Pismo is Moro Bay, with lots of great tide pooling and shelling. Ventura RV park is nice, on the wrong side of the freeway, but only a short walk on the bikeway to the sand. They constantly post family activities on their website. Skipping south past LA, as LA is not really RV friendly, there is a nice park in Huntington Beach run by the City, but reservations are very difficult.
On the pricey side, but some of our family favorites are: Newport Dunes RV resort. Fantastic clean park, private bay, no waves, pool, a real resort. Then Campland on the Bay in San Diego has planned activities for children of most ages all day long. We of heading to Campland late June with the youngest grandkids.
Not on the beach, Flying Flags in Beulton/Solvang is a fun family destination. Lots of playing fields and a nice playground for younger ones, and Solvang is a fun place to tour, on foot or on a platform bike.
Further North, we have often enjoyed Petaluma KOA just outside of San Francisco. About 15 minutes from the Golden Gate and all the sights at Golden Gate Park, the campground is lovely with paved roads for biking, lots of play areas, really clean, and family activities.
Enjoy, and Happy Trails

Some of the other coastal campgrounds we like at different times of the year. For instance, in January we love to visit San Simeon State Park near Cambria. This is the best time of year for weather there and the elephant seals are always insteresting. We prefer the upper campground, Washburn. It is all dry camping.

We also like Morro Bay State Park. Hard to book but has some sites with water and electricity. In the Pismo Beach area, we have used the Oceano part of the State Park. Just our preference.

About this time of year, if it is not forecast to be too hot, we head for the desert for wild flowers at Anza Borrego or Joshua Tree.
