Hopeing that in the next 3-4 years making the move to fulltime & selling the house. What is the advantage to being a SD resident & lic vehicles & drivers Lic in SD?

Last September we sold our home in Northern California and started full timing. I'm a California native but feel no special need to pay their crazy taxes... which come in many forms... especially if I'm not going to be there.
We researced it a bit and decided upon Texas as our new "domicile". SD was a close second but joining Escapees made it very simple to get it all done and we will be spending more time in the south than in the north.
The advantages that we realized were all related to taxes. Our coach license tags in Calif this year would have been $2100... in Texas they were ~$275 which included a one time $90 transfer. I don't remember the figures for tags on our Explorer toad but it was a similar ratio. California income tax ranges up toward 10% and Texas has no income tax.
Not only did Escapees help us through the process of "becoming Texans" step by step, but they are a great club to belong to with a number of parks we have been very impressed with... for about $85/week plus electric.
From what we learned, many feel it is important that you really commit to a new domicile (whatever state you choose) in order to avoid any possible legal hassels in the future. Having said that, there will be many who chime in that this isn't really an issue but I tend to want to stay on the safe side so we followed Escapees recommendations to the letter. This mean that our mailing address is in Livingston, Tx. Our vehicles are registered there... we're registered to vote there... our drivers licenses are issued from there... and our insurance is written from a local office there.
Best of luck!

We have our driver's licenses in SD, address through our mailing services in SD, all titles and registrations in SD. The advantages are, taxes (no state income tax, low taxes on registration of vehicles), and low insurance rates. I do not recommend anyone having a residence somewhere and trying to use a domicile in a different state.

Another plus for SD is there is no vehicle inspection.

As I recall there are 4 states that do not require you to live in the state at least six months of the year to establish residence
Texas, (already covered) Nevada (Some counties are very nasty when it comes to registration fees), Florida (No commant, as I have no information) and one more.. I am thinking that one is SD but truthfully.. I am not sure.

Texas and South Dakota seem to be the 2 most popular states for full-timing. Both make it easy to declare residency, neither has state income tax, and neither has inheritance tax.
For us, the advantages of SD over TX were cheaper vehicle insurance, no vehicle inspections, and lower tax on vehicle purchases.
Alternative Resources is one of several mail forwarding services in SD, and they have info on their web site on the advantages of SD, vehicle registration, and driver's license requirements.
One possible disadvantage to SD if you need private health insurance is that Blue Cross/Blue Shield in SD will not accept full-time RVers.
