Hi all,
My wife and I will be going to the big bend area next winter and spring. Is it comfortable to spend the year by drifting into the mountains during the summer and back down as it gets colder? For that matter are there mountains in this region?
thanks,

Short answer is yes you can find areas good for winter and summer. If you include the geographic area from Fort Davis to Del Rio you can find mild weather. Fort Davis has 6000 foot mountains (McDonald Observatory sits on one peak) and can have cold winters with occasional snow, but high elevation gives you summers that are not scorching. The Rio Grande River area (southern Big Bend east towards Del Rio) is flatter and has mild winter weather but scorching HOT summers. All of SW Texas is in a several year drought so the spring flowers might not be their best. We love to Camp at Seminole Canyon State Park (west of Del Rio on US Highway 90) at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Summer is good for Davis Mountains State Park in Fort Davis.
