In general... The booklet "How to Become a Real TEXAN" on Escapees website is a valuable source of information regarding how to establish domicile in a state. The "Do & Don't" are discussed. It is written pertaining to Texas but the guidelines can apply to any state.
Here is the link: www.escapees.com/edocs/texan.pdf
This can answer a lot of questions and help avoid some very serious pitfalls.

I wouldn't rely on information from any of the mail forwarding services. Unless the mail forwarding services have an attorney on staff who is qualified to give an opinion on these types of matters, I'll take my information directly from official state websites, thank you. Of course, YMMV.
(For example, Alternative Resources is saying that you need to only take a receipt from the RV park in order to get your driver's licenses or renewals...that clearly is not the case if you read the document to which I gave the link, above.)

The site says a rent receipt is acceptable. Maybe the RV rent receipt for one night is what they will accept?
In any case we will be going there in April to renew ours and will see what happens at that point.

By all means, PLEASE let us know what happens. We don't have to renew for a while, but we are interested in learning firsthand what ultimately shakes out. I expect it may take a few months for them to react to problems and formulate exceptions. I wish the best to those who have to go earlier and help pave the way.

I was wondering, what, if any, is the benefit to having a sd license as compared to other states?

Yes, the rental receipt is an acceptable piece of proof. HOWEVER -- and what I was trying to get across -- is that it is not the ONLY piece of proof you need to take with you. As the website to which I gave the link says, you need TWO pieces of proof of domcile, so JUST taking a rent receipt with you will not be sufficient.

No state income or personal property tax, no vehicle inspection, 3% excise tax on new vehicles, reasonable vehicle registration fees, no special drivers license required to operate a RV are some of the top benefits.

The easiest two documents beyond the birth certificate and SS card would be to use a Bank Statement and Credit card statement. You won't have to use a bank in SD, if you are using an address though a mail service (which I am) you will use this address with your existing bank and credit card company, no matter where they are located, the statements will show your SD address. This will only work if you are fulltiming without a sticks and bricks as a primary residence in another state. Your motorhome has to be your primary residence and registered and licensed in SD.

There are several other states that offer these types of advantages for fulltimers, Texas, Florida, Oregon, Montana. If you are fulltiming it's up to you where you decide you want to be "from". Tax advantages are the primary benefits. Montana utilizes LLCs to accomplish this. There has been recent developments regarding using an LLC. Some other states are not recognizing LLCs for RVrs as legitimate LLCs, so be careful.

While many people use a Montana LLC to buy their RVs, they do so without establishing domicile in Montana. Montana...as well as Oregon...have a very high personal income tax rate which Texas, South Dakota and Florida do not have.
In addition, in order to establish a domicile in Oregon, you have to actually be physically present in the state for some period of time (6 months?) before you can establish it as you domicile.
