My wife and I are using SD as our domicile. We took a quick trip to Sioux Falls last week to get our driver's licenses. As of 1-1-10 you will need to have 2 of the following: utility bill, rent reciept, phone bill, bank statement, credit card statement, etc. to establish your address for a driver's license in SD. We are using My Dakota Address for our mail forwarding and our address in Madison. We will have to provide these also when we renew in a few years. The bank receipt and credit card statement will probably be the ones we will use as we will open an account with a local bank.

Let us know how it goes with the bank and your My Dakota address. We also have My Dakota handling our mail but not fulltime yet. Thinking of next year.

I live in Florida, don't full time (per se) but we did sell our house & we are living in a campground in our fifth wheel.
My DH's license comes up in January - tried to renew on line - but it has been about 13 years since they took his picture - so he has to go in person.

Our rules are changing also!

We use his moms house for our address, and we have 2 banking accounts that even though we deal with them on line - we use his moms address for ALL accounts. Auto insurance, Verizon, Banks.......

So we just pull a pay stub, a passport and 2 of the above mentioned and
should be okay.

But Florida is changing their rules also as of 1/1/2010.

It's all part of the Real ID Act.

We will continue to use our existing bank as we will change our address to our SD one. Our phone will be our Verizon cellular and that will also show our change of address. I guess it won't be much of a hastle but those who are about to get their driver's license should be aware before you go in after the first.

That's strange, Paul at Alternative resources sent out the following email last April.
Has something changed or maybe you got an untrained clerk?

"However, for full timers you will have to stay ONE night in a campground or motel and show a receipt from them to renew or get a SD drivers license. You will still put your address on the license as your address here with us. I made many phone calls to our state legislators and the State of SD to make sure they came up with something that would allow you to get the drivers license that meets the REAL ID ACT and is accepted by the Federal Government. You will still be able to get or renew your license anywhere in the state and put your mail forwarding address on your license.
I just called Jane Schrank who is the assistant to Cindy Gerber who is the head of the Department of Public Safety. Director of Driver Licensing. Jane is going to contact the licensing offices to make sure they are giving out the correct information to you.
I look at the Real ID Act as a positive move on the states part. Without it you wouldn’t be able to broad a airplane without it or a passport.
Paul

Clay, the info you quote from Alternative Resources is the latest word I have. They just repeated that information in their last newsletter and said they would be sending out a final confirmation soon. The way I look at it, the receipt from your 1-night stay at the campground satisfies the requirement for a rent receipt.

Go to the South Dakota DMV web site, which is where I got my information (hopefully I read it correctly). It states you need 2 of the items, it also gave a few more that I wasn't concerned with. Of those a rent reciept was one, but 2 of the others would suffice, like the bank statement, credit card statement or phone bill (we will change our billing on our cellular to our SD address). We probably need to get clarification. I wouldn't mind staying in SD anyway, there is a nice camp ground up on the lake at Yankton.

Here it is from the SD DMV:
1. You need one proof of identity=birth certificate will do.
2. You need a document to prove SS#
3. You need 2 of the following: these need to be 30 days or less in age:utility bill, credit card statement, pay stub, rent reciept, phone bill, report card from school-or these that are less than 1 year in age:Bank Statement, mortgage document, tax document, homeowner's ins. policy.

Thanks for the info, we are in the process of selling the house and going full timing to SD forwarding address. Another hitch in the system.

I wonder if your motorhome insurance (for full timers) constitutes "homeowner's insurance" for this purpose? It should.

We have posts stating that 1 to 4 pieces of ID will be required.

We'll find out in a few months what is required.

All states are making changes to conform with the Real ID Act.

However, all of the mail forwarding services are reporting that there will be exceptions.

Time will tell.
