Recognizing that you and Jack have worked through his choice of words - I would add that what was offered was a little needed "tough love". I would also add that "you can do this" is also correct. As a military family I would venture to guess that you can do anything! The question is - should you? And, you've come to the right place to seek input.
It's been said that the ideal size of a Motorhomes - RV is cocktails for 6, dinner for 4 and sleeps 2. I always viewed that as long term advice and that anything could work for a vacation. Regardless of that - something not mentioned yet that you really need to consider is cargo carrying capacity. Many units on the market today look amazing until you get to that calculation.
For the endeavor you're considering you need to figure out the weight of the must haves like kitchen, dining, bedding, RV stuff like tools, hoses, equipment etc. and pet supplies. Back that out of the capacity - take result and divide by 5 and you'll have what's left for clothes, games, personal items for each of you. And remember - the maximum isn't the ideal, it's the maximum. Also towing capacity - if MH and 100's of lbs for motorcycle - that won't go in bed of truck with a 5er. Note - it's not always easy to find the capacity listed so dig deep.
As a vet and an RVer I wish you much success in whatever you do! Keep doing your research - asking questions here and elsewhere and you will make the right decision for you and your family. All the beat and safe travels.
