Full Time Q, Establishing Residency & Address

We are on schedule for full April / May 2013. We are establishing residency in South Dakota.

Our plan is to get license and plates there.
Can you use just a PO Box? And will that be sufficient for insurance also?

If I had to we could probably find friend or relative to use a S&B residence but it might be easiest to just use the PO Box if that is acceptable.

In my opinion you would be better off with a mail forwarding service. They also meet federal Homeland Security requirements. There are many in SD. SD Residency FAQ

Many of the mail forwarding services will also provide you with a street address which is necessary. Do a Google search and I'm sure that you will come up with some information.

We use Alternative Resources | RV Mail Forwarding | Sioux Falls | South Dakota and they helped us from establishing the Personal Mail Box, getting our SD DL, re-registering our auto and MH and voter registration. We established the PMB about 2 weeks in advance and the rest in one day. That required us to spend a night in SD, and then the next day getting our SD DL followed by paper work for vehicle registration and voter registration.

We use Americas Mailbox in Box Elder which is near Rapid City. We've been happy with the service.
They are located in Pennington County which does not charge $4 per wheel like some counties do, saves us $40 per year.
Americas also has a campground. The address on your license and registration is the address of the campground you stay in while you set up your paperwork. Only one address needed 514 Americas Way etc.
Good luck.

Right now we are in route to Emery, SD to get our DL and motorhome registration. We are using myhomeaddressinc.com and have found them to be very helpful in providing all the information needed. They are now our mail forwarding service, They were recommended by a friend who has been using them for 5 years and is extremely satisfied with their service.

I agree with what everyone else has said about using a regular mail forwarding service. They provide a street address that is accepted by the DMV, and many of the mail forwarding services will also assist you in transferring your vehicle registration(s).

The Real ID Act has specific requirements for the identification required to qualify for a drivers license. Information is on the SD DMV website. You need several forms of identification, plus you need to fill out an affidavit, and you will need a receipt with your name on it (and your spouse, if applicable) from at least a one-night stay in a South Dakota motel or campground.

The trick is to get your forwarding mail address set up BEFORE you spend that one night stay. The receipt for that stay MUST show that address so that when you go to the DMV you have proof of address. So, regardless of what SD service you use, get with them in advance to get your address.

One thing to note is that a mail forwarding service will give you a PMB number. PMB= private mail box.
Some companies don't like that and may not want to send something to a PMB number or accept the mail service street address with the PMB shown on your address.
The post office allows a number sign - # - to be used in place of the PMB designation. We have used the number sign for eleven years. If folks want to believe that is a suite number I don't mind.
