I was looking at purchasing a shotgun to carry in the motorhome. When I went to complete the required paperwork, I noticed that it asks for your home address. It specifically states no P.O. Boxes are allowed. Since I'm a full timer and registered/licensed in South Dakota and use a mail forwarding service all I have is a P.O. Box. Was wondering if anyone has come across this problem and if so how they resolved it.

Can you use the street address of your mailing service? That's really your address, no? Your license/registration would be at that location. When I have to give a street address I give the address of my mail service (unless the address is a UPS or FEDEX delivery). Another choice would be a relative or friends address.

Your mail forwarding service is a PMB not a PO box, which is legal.

I tried using the address of my mail forwarding company (it's also listed on my driver's license), but the dealer wouldn't accept it. He stated it's a P.O. box. My driver's license shows my address as a PMB. Since I'm completing paperwork for the Feds, I want to be truthful, so that is why I would not list a relative or friends address. I'm going to be getting a new driver's license when I'm passing through South Dakota in September, so I'll see what I can do about my address. No immediate rush on the purchase. Just another hoop that you have to jump through when you are a fulltimer.

Sounds like a dealer issue, not a Fed issue.

I agree with Dirk - I'd suggest you check out another dealer.

My mail forwarder in FL furnishes a street address. Quite sure yours does also. The pmb # is an extension of that address. One has to be careful about the address on all legal documents to prevent any misunderstanding.

I live in a stick house in the country. My legal address is a PMB. I don't get mail delivered to my stick house. My voter registration, my drivers license, my utility bills, all are in the PMB address.

I had no problem in SD at a gun dealer. Find another dealer. You can purchase long guns in any state but hand guns only in your home state.

You might consider calling the ATF and see what they have to say.

No, no,no. Don't get those boys involved, you might not ever get to purchase.

Do as stated above, find another dealer. You can even order one from an online store and have it shipped to a dealer in your state. Most dealers charge 25 bucks or so to handle the paperwork. On line dealers are usually cheaper also.

In SD, go to Cabellas to buy get a varmit permit using your campground address and it will get you a hand gun if you have your CCW.
