We have been with GEICO for 30 years. We started using it as fulltimers in 2007 when they first started their fulltimers coverage. RV and auto. There service is excellent.

as a agent, I can attest that most, if not all, companies who underwrite 'rv's, don't provide personal property coverage because it is primarily considered a VEHICLE. Just like any ordinary everyday auto policy, your personal belongings are not covered by your policy, only the VEHICLE is covered.

this is a great distress to some people, especially those who had a computer stolen from their car, etc. Personal belonging are typically covered through either a HOME policy, or a RENTERS policy, since most 'personal property' is at an address where you live, not in a vehicle that you drive. Having said that, many policies do offer property coverage for vehicles, at least property that is 'normally' found in vehicles, such as tapes, cds, gps devices, etc.

now, for RV policies, you can find coverage for your property IF you either add it as an additional rider(only a few carriers might offer this), of you make your policy a FULL TIMER policy, which basically tells the insurer that this is your ONLY home. This additional coverage may include personal property within the RV, as well as other property you have stored at a commercial or secure facility. It also includes personal LIABILITY coverage for accidents that happen to unrelated persons while on your RV property(RV site, within your RV, etc).
Of course, full timer policy consideration will increase your cost.

When my toad was broken into by breaking the glass, the toad insurance company covered the repair to the glass AND paid $300 toward the things that were stolen (a camelback for biking that had lots of tools and other non-car stuff in it). We have fulltimers insurance with a different company, but the toad insurance company never asked about any other insurance--just asked what was stolen and sent a check.

BancorpSouth Insurance Services gave me an estimate for full-timers through the Escapees. Much better coverage then others, however my toad and motorcycle are cheaper elsewhere. Lots of choices out there.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Does anyone know of a different insurance carrier that would cover personal property in an RV?

I've about had it with State Farm! And I've got 6 policies through them currently.

From shopping around in the past, I couldn't find any other insurance carrier that offered the same coverage, at the same or lower rates.

But refusing to cover personal property in my RV has, 'broken the camel's back'. I'm ready to switch insurance carriers, even if it costs a little more.
I've heard the Yust's of C&C Insurance on the Living the RV Dream Podcast. Chris was just on one of them just the other day. She seems very knowledgable. Perhaps they can help.

There are a number of companies that issue full timers policies. National General/Good Sam, Progressive, and Geico are a few of them.

When we became SD residents we used Dougherty & Associates. 3704 S Westport Ave, Sioux Falls, SD 57106. (605) 361-6318. They are a broker/agent and can get quotes from several companies.

Interesting.

We had Geico for YEARS. When we started full timing they would NOT insure us. They insured the RV when we were living in it - as long as we stayed in one place. They either wanted a S&B policy OR to insure another vehicle (like a toad) to cover the RV. Too bad, as we really liked the service and their rates were great.

Maybe we got a CSR that didn't understand what full timing is or did not understand their products?

We ended up with Nationwide/Allied Ins - referred by Good Sam. They have also provided good service.

Two years ago I did an online quote form with Geico. I immediately got a phone call from them; if I wanted to talk to them, I would have called in the first place and not gone the online route. I didn't call back and they called again.

They eventually did send an email quote, but it was just a total, with no breakdown of coverages. I requested an itemization, and got a canned reply telling me the phone number to call.

When I replied, "Just to confirm--there's no way you can email me an itemized itemized quote?" they emailed the itemization. Actually, they emailed it three separate times, for some reason.

Their policy was six months (I prefer a year) and it wasn't all that cheap and it didn't include a premium for fulltimers coverage even though I'm sure that the online form specified that.

I've always been a little uneasy about Geico for fulltimers, and this didn't change that. Being insured as a fulltimer makes me nervous to begin with, since the whole "garaging address" is a fiction from the get-go, so I'm sticking with someone who really understands what it is I'm doing and what it is they're covering.

It was Progressive for a while, until the premium went through the roof (with no claims), then Miller for I think six years (until I had an unpleasant non-claim-related experience with them, preceded by their dropping the ball on getting a quote a couple of years before that), and now I have Blue Sky through Thum Insurance.

The quote I got from Thum was less than the quote I got directly from Blue Sky, by the way. And it was the same with Miller--the premium I paid for National Interstate through Miller was less than if I went to National Interstate directly.

Was this prior to 2007?? That is when they started writing fulltimers. Also did you speak to an RV specialist in the Motorsports Division. There was a learning curve over the first 1 year but when you call now follow the prompts to RV. Be specific that you are a fulltimers
We could not be happier with our experience. However be mindful that your coverages may be different depending on your domicile/garaged location. Insurance company's must abide with the insurance regulations of each state and they are not all the same

Just be aware, if you are using someones else's address without actually fulfilling domicile requirements of that state, you are committing fraud on several levels. Bank. Insurance. Maybe tax.

The Geico CSR specifically said, without a policy on another vehicle (toad) that would not write it. We do not have another vehicle.

Grand Lakes RV may be nice and inexpensive BUT a good 20 miles from nearest grocery store or a Walmart store.....no matter if you head South to Ocala or North to Gainesville. No thanks. We spend enough monies in gasoline and/or diesel. Like to be closer to civilization when it comes to daily necessities.

While this thread of insurance issues for Fulltimers is interesting, there are a lot of things to consider. We began with National Interstate. We had 2 comp claims within 6 months, none to do with human error. And the one claim was over 10K. No questions, no adjuster......just send photos and estimates. Done. Quick. Simple. No hassle. Love them.

Just to error on cautious side, I recently went to Blue Sky. They would not cover us as, although I am under 75, my husband is not. So, that left Blue Sky out. Besides, they have a limit on motorhome worth.....I believe it was under 250K. Then went to Geico, Progressive, Good Sam, etc. Progressive came within $400 of National Interstate BUT Progressive would NOT give me Total Loss Replacement for coach. Geico and others would only quote 5K deductible on both collision and comprehensive. NOT. I have 500 now and that's what I want to stay with. Then there's numerous other differences......uninsured motorists, personal property effects, etc. Story goes on and on. With more and more folks purchasing RV's and assuming it's an easy inexpensive way to live......NOT.....anything but. And insurance companies can afford to be picky and expensive. Remember, you get what you pay for and this gal wants to have peace of mind going down the road. So, National Interstate has my vote. Good Luck to ya'll ...... It is quite a decision.
