We are going on the road for several months. What should we do about the refrigerator? Does anybody turn them off? Is it harmful to do that? Trying to lower the electric bill while out spending bucks on travel.

Turning it off will not hurt it, but be sure to leave or block the doors open to prevent bad odors from forming.

We travel for 6-7 months every year (get out of Florida to avoid heat/humidity/hurricanes). We leave the refrigerator and freezer on in the stick and brick after filling them mostly full with water in plastic milk jugs. No special reason other than, I guess, laziness. Cleaning the fridge thoroughly before leaving so it can be left open is not high on our list of things we want to do. If you are going to turn it off, clean surfaces thoroughly, dry and leave the door(s) open.
