What do you do when you're rig needs major maintenance requiring down time of a week or more?

Good question but it's never happened to us.... at least yet. Many shops have limited hook ups and are willing to schedule the work on the coach so they can pull it out at the end of the day and let you stay in it at night. I would think that only very major work would require someone to actually move out of the rig... but it happens I guess.

Many places will let you sleep in the unit at night and they work on it during the day. If that is not feasible, stay at a motel or with family / friends.

We once had a repair that required that we move out of our RV for most of a week. So: we took ourselves, our cats, and our laptops to a nearby motel.

We've been full-timing for going on 5 years. We've several times stayed in the parking lot of a dealer. They always seem to be ready to plug us in and most of them are familiar with full timers and it is not an Issue. I have found that dealers are willing to work with you. We tell them up front that this is our home and that we are full-timers. My wife and I talked about this scenario and could move into a Motel if needed. but never have.

We had to set at a Ford dealership in Chadron, Nb. for 4 days while we waited for a fuel-pump to to be flown in from Nevada. Dealer let us plug into their power and water and even gave us a car to drive only asking that we put some gas back in it...l o n g 4 days. no local tv or radio...100 deg and they were having to spray the whole town for misquitos that bit day & night

In over 10 years of fulltiming we never had to spend an extended time waiting on repairs. Several times we had to wait a couple of days and the RV dealer always gave us electric and water. This also included Cummins and Spartan chassis shops.

And that is why we go with a trailer and a truck....the truck can go to the shop and we still have a place to live.

We dropped it off with a list and flew to Hawaii, called to check that it was finished a week before we got back, picked it up, paid the bill (nothing for storage) and went on down the road.
