RATS!!!

Hi all! We live full time in our fifth wheel on a farm. Recently weíve heard some rustling around in the walls and after some investigation discovered that we have some uninvited rodents in the belly of our home.

We found where they are getting in. A screw that secured the protective cover under the RV rusted and broke leaving a small gap next to the outside stairs. Itís easy enough to fix but Iím not sure if the rats are in there right now. We got a catch and release trap and set it next to the hole but so far they have just eaten the food without getting trapped.

They havenít been able to get inside the living area, just the wiring and plumbing area but I have no idea how to get in there There is a gap under the sink where they have come up but thereís a barrier they canít get over. Itís too small to put the trap in. Plus Iím afraid of using poison or the killing traps because of the many animals and pets that live around here.

Iím afraid that if we block the way that they get in and out that they will either start destroying the wiring and other vital stuff trying to escape. Or they will die and start rotting, making living here unpleasant.

And we own 3 ferrets so here is a fun ferret fact! They were originally meant for getting into tight areas to chase out and kill rats which is exactly what we need. But I have a feeling that they would just become friends with the rats and fall asleep inside the RV.

Rats hate ammonia. If you can get it into their new "home" it will flush them out. Then seal the holes. You'll have to air the RV out afterwards.

They also don't like lights. Can you get a strand of Christmas lights tucked into the hole? Put peanut butter on the trip and they have to get real close to get to it and the trap will snap. Are you sure it's rats? Or mice? Or even chipmunks?

I’m 99% sure it’s rats. I was thinking (hoping) that it was mice but the noise they make running around is almost as loud as the ferrets and they weigh 2lbs. Plus I see rats hanging out by the feed and poop barns all the time.

The lights idea is awesome! We’ve started leaving all the outside lights on as well. And we tried peanut butter and traps. The buggers ate the peanut butter and set it off 3 times with no luck. And I had a close call setting one up with a curious ferret wanting to help!

We sealed up every conceivable entry point except for the one we found and shoved some string lights down the kitchen entry way and we heard nothing last night. So today we sealed up the last hole so fingers crossed!

I assume you were using rat traps and not mouse traps? Hope you solved the problem!
