Derek and I are thinking about moving our residency to SD. My question is, has anyone who holds or held at the time a valid Commercial DL gone through this process? When you moved your CDL over what did you have to do?

I have been in contact with a company called alternative Resources, but I don't think they knew much about the specifics of a CDL. Did you have to re-test? Just take the written tests?

The SD DMV page was pretty non specific.

Thanks,

John

It's my understanding that mail forwarding services cannot be used as an address for a CDL.

However, the service I use has a solution, I believe. I don't have a CDL, but Ron, the owner of My Home Address said he has a solution.

I had a valid and current CDL which transfered from Minnesota to South Dakota (June 2007)just by getting the new SD lic. and requesting a CDL classification. Yes, the mail forwarding address (My Dakota Address) could not be used. However, the owner (Terri) of My Dakota Address uses her home (resident) address which is acceptable to SD authorities.

Thanks for the other services, but that really isn't my question.

I know legally you cannot use a PMB or PO box for a CDL address, you must use your residence address. This is not the question. There is a way around that, most of the SD mailing services have you sign a lease to parking rights of sort... which makes it legal, at least as far as anyone concerned cares.

The question I have is will I be required to take the written and driving tests in SD. The written tests are not a big deal, but arranging a truck and trailer to take the driving test can be a big pain, and expense.

Does anyone on the board have a CDL that they moved to SD? What did you have to do at the DMV?

John

No first hand knowledge, but apparantly just the surrender of your valid out of state CDL will get you a SD CDL.

http://www.state.sd.us/dps/dl/Online...5CDLMANUAL.pdf

A bit of further info, SD does not require a CDL for RV's...see page 3

NO state requires a CDL to drive an RV. Some require an Endorsement based upon weight or length, which includes usually a written and short driving test, but these are not the same as CDLs.

That may be, but there are people who already have a CDL and don't want to lose it.

Which is my case, I have a valid CDL and do not want to give it up just yet.

Barb, you are partially correct that no state requires a Commercial DL to operate an RV in private use, however, there are a number of states that require a Non Commercial class B or A depending on the weight and combination of the vehicle. Depending on the state, it may be just an endorsement, but most that have the requirement require a class type change.

John,

I believe that I said just that - that either based upon weight or length (California) a lot of states requirement an endorsement (or Class Change) of the basic license. We are in Texas and have Class A licenses (we have a 10,000# hitch so could pull something that heavy with the motorhome) and were required to do a written and driving test.

The original statement was about SD not requiring a CDL for RVs and I just pointed out that NO state requires a CDL for an RV. The C stands for Commercial.

The reason this is so important is that a lot of people get scared about having to get an endorsement-class change for their drivers licenses because someone always says CDL and they think it will be an expensive/long/hard process, so they just ignore the requirements. And given the size of some of the RVs, they should have to demonstrate that they can handle a rig that big.
