RV Length Restrictions

On my good sam's gps, it informed me that my RV may be in violation of length restrictions in some states. My Coach is 41 foot and I am pulling a jeep liberty. Has anyone experienced any problems driving in or through any states because of the size or length of their coach with a toad?

Tom

I am about 64'. I tow a ford flex and I have an extension on my towbar so I can put my bike rack behind my Coach. Never had an issue. I've been back and forth from Michigan and Florida and to Colorado.

Technically, that's right. According to my mapping program, a 41' coach exceeds max length (of 40') in about 5 states, including my home state of Wisconsin. Funny though, they didn't hesitate to take my sales tax money, or in issuing plates, when I bought our 43' coach back in 2010.

I'm not loosing sleep over it. Most of those laws predate any notion that RVs might someday rival trucks in over all length and most police departments have much better things to do than hassle an otherwise law abiding citizen.

I thought the max towing length combined withe rv + toad or trailer is 65 ft. Unless you have a permit. I have seen 45 ft + a race car trailer. I am not sure if the DOT requires a special permit. I like to keep it un 65 ft. I don't need to be surprised.

States will abide by other state laws. If not, then there would be a lot less RV's visiting states like California and I am sure in our capitalistic economy that would not go over very well.

We've full-timed for 16 years traveling constantly. We've never encountered a problem with our 40' towing. California does have a web site that gives you some restricted roads depending on length but we wouldn't go on those anyway. Don't worry about it.

I've gotten the alert only a couple of times since we started full timing a couple of years ago (can't remember which states), but we haven't had any problems either. We're at about 60' with our CR-V connected. I think the only time I would be concerned is if I got into an accident and someone wanted a reason to come after me. I'm sure it would be pointed out what a horrible, lawless person I am if that happened.

As Dad used to say; "Don't ask the question if you don't want the answer". Believe me, you don't.
