RX INS

We are planning to FT after my wife retires or just gets tired of working. I have found reasonably priced healthcare but it will not cover medicine. Does anyone know where I can find RX insurance it is very important to us because of the price of our medicine. We are pre-medicare but not for long.

Thank you
Bigbrad

I use SilverScript. Only have had it for a month, but so far no issues.

X2 Silverscript. My pricing is through Med/D, but I can give kudos for their customer service and administration for the past three years.

Once you are on Medicare you will have a choice of those Part D plans that are available in your state. There are also Medicare Advantage plans you may wish to consider that combine medical and Rx insurance.

The Part D plans are all basically alike in that they all have to pay for the same amount of Rx costs before putting you in the donut hole. Then after you pay a certain amount more you come back out into what's called catastrophic coverage. The plans differ in their premiums, the copays for each drug you take and what drugs are in their formulary. It's all rather complicated but, fortunately, the broker we use has an excellent computer system into which we enter all our meds and it calculates what each plan will cost us for the next year with premiums and copays all included. Last year we has Cigna and this year we have United Healthcare all because those were the cheapest plans for us. I see no reason to be "loyal" to one plan or the other; I'll go with whichever is least expensive for us.

Getting the equivalent coverage before you have Medicare is more difficult and expensive. We went for several months with my wife not having any prescription coverage because we couldn't get any. That was pre-Obamacare and she had pre-existing conditions which meant she couldn't get coverage. At least now coverage is available, if you can afford it.

Look up all of your prescriptions on Goodrx.com and online Canadian pharmacies. It might be cheaper than insurance, especially if you have less than a year before Medicare kicks in. I can buy 1 of my prescriptions from healthwarehouse.com cheaper than my Humana co-pay. Before that drug became available as a generic I was able to get it thru an online Canadian pharmacy for 75 cents per pill. The same drug thru any US pharmacy was over $8/pill.
