Jim, thanks for the clarification about the reason for the sensitivity of the politicians on this issue. After I posted my previous comment, I saw your excellent explanation over on the Escapees Forum.

So the locals got the issue put onto the ballot, and the locals defeated it, but the politicians are taking it out on us RVers. If the politicians succeed in chasing a bunch of us full-timers away by disenfranchising us, I guess they'll be looking for even more money to make up their budget.

To be fair, the vast majority of SD politicians recognize the value of fulltime RV'ers and welcome us to their state. This senator Tieszen has raised his fear of us impacting local elections for years, but he waited until his last year in office to actually introduce a bill. He is term limited out and can't run for re-election as a senator (or give us all the opportunity to vote him out). All my contacts in SD and all the major mail forwarding firms, acting on our behalf, have all assured that this bill is not going anywhere and has no support outside senator Tieszen and a few of his close friends.

I don't believe full-timers vote in the local elections and they shouldn't if they don't stay there long enough to know the issues or candidates or use the facilities.

Full-timers definitely have a say in the presidential elections and an absentee ballot is easily obtained - in Texas, anyway. I sure hope they vote this year so certain loud mouths don't get in and ruin it for our country.

For those who haven't heard, we got an email from the Gen Mgr of Dakota Post reporting that the author of the bill to ban full-timers from voting in SD has withdrawn the bill for lack of support. It's dead.

"In reading these articles and comments, it seems like the good people of SD no longer want the estimated $12 million in revenue that we full-timers provide the state, all without asking for any services in return except for allowing us to register our vehicles there and issuing us a drivers license - both of which we pay for. Even if this bill does not pass, which it probably won't, we will definitely be considering moving our domicile elsewhere."

That is approximately .28% of the state budget. Certainly not a significant amount of money when taken in context. Just saying.

Well, you know, a million here, a million there, every little bit helps!

Thanks for the update.

Even though the sponsor of the bill voted YEA to table it, Senator Alan Solano voted not to. Senator Solano is also from Rapid City, so you folks who are using Amarica's Mailbox need to keep an eye on him.
