As we're about to go full time, we need to store some upholstered furniture (couch and two chairs that are quite costly). I was cautioned about storing furniture in that it can pick up a musty smell in a storage garage that might ruin the furniture. This has evidently happened before.
Any experience in this area??
Thanks,
EZ Livin

We have had our stuff stored in NH for over five years. We have gone back several times to check on it and get rid of some of the stored items. It's dusty, but so far no other problems.

John,
When we went full-time we decided to not put things into a storage unit for that exact reason. We had some things in a mini-store type unit years before that and ended up with mildew on a coach that had to be thrown out. The unit I had was is Wisconsin, and they also had a bit of an insect problem as they were near a lake which invited spiders and lake flies. We didn't have damage from the insects, just a nuisance that required a lot of cleanup before we moved things back into our then residence.
You do have another option, use an indoor facility, like a moving/storage company that will crate and store your things in a warehouse that is temp controlled. The downside to this is it is generally billed based on weight, and access will require an advance call to arrange the crates be brought down to access them, which usually involves some type of dock charge.
I have heard a number of problems from fellow full-timers that have had similar issues with self-store type facilities, but have also had about the same number of responses that people have had no problems with these units.

We decided not to store our furniture for the same reasons that Moder2 stated. Many people have problems with mildew on upholstered furniture, and heat and humidity can take their toll on wooden furniture. Some people do OK, but we fugured it wasn't worth the chance.
Indoor, climate controlled storage, IMO, is the only option for valuable pieces that you want to make sure do not become damaged by heat, cold, and/or humidity. But, as Moder2 says, this type of storage can be quite expensive.
We don't know where or when we will settle down again, and there's a good chance our furniture wouldn't fit our new location both in size and style. For this reason, and because of the high expense of storage, we gave much of our furniture to our daughter and son in law and sold what they didn't want. We can visit our old furniture any time we want.
