Water heater

I live in my small Dutchman Kodiak. Noticed last night, the water heater didn't heat as much water as usual. I went outside to check on it and noticed soot on the trailer above the vent. Anyone know what the problem is? I only have the water heater on when I need hot water and it is a propane heater.

Probably a spiders nest in the air tube. Remove it to clean out

It is a Dutchman Kodiak 2011 22 footer. The water heater is propane only.

Thanks hondavalk, I checked for anything in the vent tube. It's clean except for soot and flakes. I was told to put a flea collar behind the access door to keep spiders out. Seems to be working quite well.

So is it still sootier above the vents? or is it still not working properly? I have seen alot of what I call a Daddy long leg spider's in and around my MH, I think they are coming inside for the winter.

water heater

I don't know where you are, but the water coming into the tank is likely a lot colder now than it was only a month ago. If you're only turning the gas on when you need HW, you may have to wait a little longer.

Having said that, if the soot trail is new you may need a burner adjustment.

Black soot means you air-gas ratio is out of sync. On the air gas tube is an adjustable opening. If you have never adjusted this then take it to a qualified service center.

Hi Spritz, so far, no spiders. The flea collar works great to keep them out. Guess they don't like the smell.

JFXG, Thank you, I think I may need a burner adjustment. I am on well water so it stays the same temp- freezing! I'll look into the adjustment. All this is new to me. Never had to live in a travel trailer before.

Chief02, thank you for the info. I am unable to take it to a service center. The trailer is to tall and heavy for my 30 yr old Toyota truck to haul. Any advice on how to adjust the air/gas ratio will be greatly appreciated.

Why would the air-gas ratio get out of sync all of a sudden when the trailer is not being moved around? I've been living in it for 7 months now and It's stationary.
