We have a Waterstick brand watersoftener, I did a lot of shopping, and this is the simplist to charge, least expensive, uses table salt, works very well and it makes my wife happy. We were camped in Arizonia with some friends, and they were leaving to go drycamping, I hooked up the waterstick when he filled his tank, and the first thing he did when he got home was order one.

We use a FloPur Mark 8000. You can see it here Flow Pur: Mark 8000

It works well. It has a 8000 grain capacity which means it will soften (for example) 400 gallons of 20 grain per gallon water.
We use about 13 gallons of water per day so we would have to regenerate about once a month.
Here in AZ the water hardness is 50 grains per gallon so we have to regenerate about every 12 days.

Note that some units like the Waterstick have a much lower capacity (1500 grains) and where the water is hard will have to be regenerated much more often.

The above mentioned softners use ionic exchange rosin as the stuff that does the work in the softner. This is the type to use.
Regeneration of these is with sodium chloride (table salt) or potassium chloride which is harder to obtain and is a little more expensive. For those who need a low sodium diet the potassium chloride is the way to go.
DO NOT USE THE MAGNET UNITS AS THEY DO NOT REALLY WORK.
