Which bank to use full timing

We will be full timing in November of this year. We were wondering what is the best bank to use. We have heard some banks are better than others were just trying to smooth out the transition.

I'm not a FTer, but I use Chase. Those banks are EVERYWHERE.

Bank of America. We used them with the company I worked for that was nation wide. Worked foe 98percent of our 500 locations across the country

I don't know if it is the best but we have an account with Bank of America since they have branches all over the nation. If you keep the minimum balance it is a free account. We only use their debit card at their ATM's to get cash if we need it.

For most of our other purchases we use Visa or Mastercard credit cards and pay them off each month (we consider it a free loan) so there are no finance charges and it doesn't tie up our money in the bank like a debit card does. We also get get discounts with our AAA Visa card on gas and other purchases. With our GM Mastercard we build up points that we can use if we purchase a GM vehicle.

Good Luck,
Jon

We were full time for four years and just used our credit union and one Chase Visa card. Pretty much all of our banking is electronic so branch locations weren't an issue for us.

Everything we spend (except for pocket cash) goes through either the credit union accounts or that Chase Visa. It makes it really simple to do Quicken updates and run quick reports to track spending.

That's exactly how we do it. Our Credit Union branch is in Florida, I haven't been in there in years. 99% of our banking is electronic. On the rare occasion we have a paper check to deposit, I use their website to find the closest Credit Union Service Center. ATM withdrawals are free if we use a "Cashpoints" ATM.

You might want to check with your CU about ways to deposit checks now. We can deposit paper checks in to an affiliated (I think it needs to be another CU but not necessarily mine) ATM and a copy of the actual check even appears on my receipt. If you carry a scanner with you (we have an HP all in one printer), you can even deposit the paper check electronically from the coach. I'm pretty sure there are smart phone apps that can do it too.

The technology is incredible and incredibly scary at the same time.

The "affiliated" walk in CU is a member of the CU Service Center network. I forgot to mention that some of the Service Centers my CU lists are, in fact, ATM's inside 7-Elevens. I haven't used one yet, but I suspect they scan the check, deposit it and issue a receipt, possibly with an image of the check. As you say, we live in scary technological times.

If you are or were in the military and are eligible to join USAA, I highly recommend USAA Federal Savings Bank. They have one branch in San Antonio, TX which I have never visited and I have been banking with them for more than 20 years. They deal with members who are active duty military, deployed all over the world, so they provide excellent support via the Internet or over the phone. Their customer service is top notch and I can even deposit checks by taking a picture of them with smartphone! They also reimburse up to 10 ATM fees per month.

We dumped BOA several years ago due their policies...bunch of crooks with the fees even for high limit depositers. Went with Wells Fargo and much friendlier. Bank online for the most part.

We use Wells Fargo also but not ft'ers. With online banking, iPhone app banking, automatic draft for payments, automatic deposits, 24/7 phone support, access to thousands of ATM's, and no charge cash back at most checkout counters for when you need a bit of real cash. And they do have hundreds of branches arund the country just in case you need a touchy/feely experience.

WRONG: No Chase banks in upstate South Carolina (Which is where we winter)

To answer the O/P's question: NO BANK, that's right NO BANK.

Use a Credit Union.. Many (most in fact) Credit unions belong to a network of credit unions (A credit union, union) that let members of other credit unions use their ATM's for free (not all mind you but most) thus I can go to the credit union in Seneca SC, and get money from my Credit Union Account without paying a service charge... Can't do that with my wife's Chase account.

In addition, How would you like to OWN yoru own bank? Well the "Union" Part of "Credit Union" means that the thing is owned by it's depositors. So you own your own bank (Well a tiny part of it).

Forget banks, CREDIT UNIONS are the answer.

Final comment:

I recall some years back a big bank scandal, and another more recently.

I recall a few years back a big scandal on Savings and Loans.

However.. Credit unions..... Not so much scandal ther.

If you are a veteran you have the ability to use USAA Bank. We are full-time and have been using USAA since we started almost a year ago. They are great to deal with, keep a close eye on your CC purchases to ensure that there is no unauthorized use of your card, free ATMs available almost everywhere, ATM fee reimbursement when no free ATM available, free checking, electronic bill pay, check deposit at most UPS Stores and car insurance. There are other services available also. These are just the ones we use.

If you need a stick and brick place to go and a touchy feely bank experience, choose a bank or credit union with branches near where you might be. If, however, you are like many of us who have not been inside a stick and brick financial institution for years, then choose one with the best interest rates and services. We use ING Direct as we get a better interest rate on savings/checking (admittedly small). ATM access is everywhere and free. We get four or five checks per month that we take photos of with our smart phones and deposit online. Bill pay is all done online and all other deposits are direct deposit. I had to write a check the other day and had to stop and think how, it has been so long.
