We just got our RV, and we want to camp in Ohio this winter, just weekend stuff. Everywhere I look, it's closed, any, thoughts?

You could try this AEP camping. Plus, it is free. All you do is print out a permit and sign. If you go, let me know how it went as I have always wanted to go there.

ReCreation Land

(Short insert)
Through vigorous reclamation efforts, which include the planting of over 63 million trees and the establishment of more than 600 lakes and ponds and nearly 380 campsites, we have turned this former mining territory into a vibrant recreation area.
Located in southeastern Ohio, ReCreation Land, along with the Conesville Coal Lands, outside AEP's Conesville Plant, and the Avondale Wildlife Area, southwest of Zanesville, Poston Plant Lands, northwest of Athens and Gavin Plant Lands, west of Rutland are free for public use. We do require that visitors secure a permit, free of charge, either by downloading one from this site or obtaining one through the AEP office in McConnelsville,

Welcome To Alum Creek.com

I don't know where you are or intend to go in Ohio but this place is great. It is open all year and is across the road from Alum Creek State Park and the reservoir. This park has won many awards and we have used it often as our first stop on our way South. Have fun.

We camp in Ohio State Parks all year. The website, www.dnr.state.ohio.us gives what parks keep the shower house open all winter, too.

You might also want to look at the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District campgrounds and parks. www.mwcd.org Again some are open year 'round.

You didn't say where you were from. Maybe we'll see you around soon.

Sorry folks, I just looked at your profile. Avon Lake is not that far from some good camping. I found Punderson (Just about my favorite campground) to be the state Park campground with a heated shower house closest to you.

See you down the road?

Just stating the obvious, but be prepared for sub-freezing weather in case the weatherman blows it. It's been known to happen.

Don't forget that tire pressures drop quite a bit as it gets colder.

While the majority of private CG's in OH close for the winter, a few I know (there might be more) that are open are:
Cross Creek
Cardinal Center
Wolfie's
Evergreen RV Park
Twin Lakes

Most OH state parks are open during winter, although with limited facilities. HERE's the 2011-2012 list. Having a park w/heated showers/restrooms would be quite important when boondocking in winter, IMO - even if you had to walk through snow to get to them.

If/when you do go out, post back with your experiences.
