Boondocking near Bryce Canyon NP

We are in a campground at Zion National Park, but tomorrow we are headed to Bryce Canyon NP. I am REALLY tired of the campground experience and would like to find a nice quiet spot for 3-4 nights within a short driving distance to Bryce.

I know I can disperse camp in the Dixie National Forest, but I'd like to have a little more specific location that will work for us. Moho is only 25' long and I have solar panels and a generator. Just need a parking spot.

I know the elevation is high, is there still snow on the ground? Weather.com says daytime temps in the 60's but freezing at night. Has anyone been there this time of the year?

Any suggestions?

Sorry, just saw too late to help. Hope you spent some time in Red Canyon & Kodacrome!

hi Bob,

I found a great spot a 1/2 mile off hwy 12 in the Dixie National Forest. Only about 10 miles to Bryce. The weather is turning cool and rainy on Thursday so I plan to leave here tomorrow. I'll check both of those out for my next stop. Thanks

Eventually, I want to be in Seattle for the summer at my daughter's place. The weather is too cloudy for me until June or so. From here I thought I'd head towards Salt Lake City, but I'm not much for city life. I'm really enjoying just hanging out in the Dixie National Forest about 12 miles from Bryce. I need to pick up a package at the Panguitch, UT post office on Friday.

It's nice to be retired and open to possibiliites. Got any suggestions?

Oh yeah, I decided not to leave as I had planned. I just moved down near the gravel road to lessen the risk of getting stuck in the mud.

The rain was almost a non-event. In Oklahoma they would have called that sprinkles. No run-ff, just a dust settler. I'm gonna move back up into the trees later today.

If you want some wild country try the San Rafael Swell (N of Hanksville, west of Green River) and bisected by I70. First, you'll drive on Rt 12 through Cap. Reef NP and to me the most beautiful drive anywhere! Route 12 will simply blow your mind!

The Swell certainly could be, should be, Utah's sixth National Park, but for now it is run by the BLM as a multiuse, mostly now recreational area. There is a good bit of OHV use especially around Temple Wash, but the place is so big you can easily get away from them. Goblin State Park is terrific and has a nice developed camping area. Otherwise, most camping in the Swell is Boondocking. You can join in with the motorheads or younger canyoneers, or get away, far away.

Suggest you simple find out more on Google!

We are moving closer to Bryce tomorrow and on Mon or Tues I plan to drive the Toad east on Hwy 12. I have heard great things about the drive. I'll check those out. Thanks Bob

You will love Rt 12! Keep it in the center/right lane!

We will be down there around then. Maybe see you in Boulder Town!

When you drive in to see Bryce, drive clear to the end of the road before stopping. And on the way back, all the viewpoints will be right turns and you won't have to cross traffic.

Good tip. That's what we did and it worked great.

Thanks to the guy who works at the Ruby,s campground office I have found a great boondocking spot that could not be any dloser to Bryce Canyon. They even have free maps of the ATV trails, which are mostly in the national forest.

Just before the large rock Bryce Canyon sign, the one people stop and take their picture in front of, there is a forest service road off to the right (west). There is a small sign that says, "No Camping Here", but that means right there. Take that dirt road about 1/2 mile and you will start seeing mostly level and often pull-thru spots where others have camped. This is known as Dave's Hollow to the locals, but there are no signs.

There is construction going on now further down that road and there were a lot of dump trucks coming thru stirring up dust on Monday, but hopefully that will be done soon. Just stop at the Ruby's campground office and tell them the lady with the monkey sent you. They will know the status. Also, they sell propane, have fresh water and other supplies and have a dump station only $5 if not registered with them. Really nice, helpful folks!
