Boondocking Western Wisconsin, Eastern MN?

We're in La Crosse, WI. I've tried the various apps/sites but haven't found many boondocking areas close to us. We have a nice State Park only 17 miles away, but does anyone know of any boondocking or real inexpensive areas within say 50 miles or so? TIA

There's a COE campground 30 miles south of La Crosse, WI.
(RV site w/electric $24 a night...no electric $18):
Facility Details - BLACKHAWK PARK, WI - Recreation.gov

One 97 mile south near Postosi Wi, ($20): http://www.recreation.gov/camping/gr...O&parkId=73193

And another 90 miles north near Eau Galle, WI, ($10-$20): Facility Details - HIGHLAND RIDGE, WI - Recreation.gov

You're probably looking for a longer term stay, but we've overnighted several times at the rest area just across the river on I-90. We got there early one evening and watched a string of barges go through the locks there from close up. You can drive/walk right down to the locks below the rest area.

Best of luck.

Here's a lsit of inexpensive camp grounds in Nicolet National Forest Nicolet National Forest Campgrounds. Some of them are not terribly far from you.

Most national forests also permit free, "dispersed camping" outside of the camp grounds. The specific regulations vary from one national forest to another, so check with one of the ranger stations.

Call the Forest Service offices of the National Forest you want to go to. They will be able to tell you where you can boondock. We haven't been up that way recently enough to remember specific sites, but I do remember they exist.

I stayed at a nice LaCrosse city campground a few years ago -- Goose Island. About $20/night I think. Wisconsin has lots of great city and county park campgrounds-- much cheaper than the state parks (especially as the SPs charge a daily entrance fee on top of the camping fee). Not too much free boondocking that I know of, but the Forest Service offices would be the best places to check on that.
