Have read the threads on MHs to Alaska but haven't any on using TTs on the Alcan. Anyone have experience doing this? We have friends who want to do the trip with us so we're really looking at the possibilty. Thanks

No real problem with taking a TT to Alaska. One has to slow down on the last couple of hundred miles before the Alaska border because of frost heaves.

We have taken a TT there on two occasions. We spent 8 weeks in Alaska both times. Fantastic experience both times.

Hey thanks for the info We're planing a slow trip anyway, no hurries at all. Do you think 24 to 26 feet would be too long? Currently have a 2 axel 20 footer but it may be too small for 4 people. Looking a little longer.

Don't let the stories scare you. I have done the alcan in everything from a Chevy pick up to double trailered Peterbuilt. And three round trips with campers. Once was a mini Winnie. Once with a 26' work n play toy hauler and most recently with a 34' Monaco. Just take it easy. The road is in decent shape. The casiar is a bit rough but still plenty travel able.

Took our 36ft diesel MH towing a Jeep Wrangler twice - 2006 and 2009. Might do it in again in 2013 or 14. A must have book is the Mile Post (The MILEPOST: Alaska Travel Guide and Trip Planner.) For example, it gives you all the turn outs, tells you if there double entry (good for us folks that can't always turn around), all points of interest, whether the road is paved or not, etc.

We like to travel these highways with a least one other rig - it's long distances between cities.

May be a little late posting on this conversation but... 2006 we pulled a 26ft
TT clear up the Yukon passed over into Alaska via Taylor Highway mostly gravel and had no problem, some areas take slow especially that highway but you will have the vacation of a lifetime! Alcan is a piece of cake! Enjoy!

In 1983 took the Cassiar highway up in a 1973 Ford Station Wagon, tent camping the whole way. Back then the Cassiar was about 300 miles of dirt road in B.C.. Saw and hung out with more than one person in a TT. Some pretty big ones too. Just have to use common sense when the road is bad, you have to slow down. The best thing about the road was everybody looked out for everyone else. If something happens somebody will stop to help you. I have a friend who just got back and said it is still pretty much the same about people helping each other.

In my opinion the best way to see Alaska is drive up and then take the Ferry back down to see all the stuff and places you can't get to by road.

Finished a 4-month trip in mid-Sept with our fifth wheel. Saw plenty of TTs on the trip. Shouldn't be a problem in any type of RV if common sense is used about speed--plenty of places that 20mph is too fast, but also lots of good areas.

I was 63' long MH and trailer with toad one year ago. Went everywhere one should go and a few places one shouldn't go. Had to back up to turn around a couple times(no long distance, a few feet) and had friends with 36-38' 5th wheels with no problems what so ever. Saw a number of good sized TT on the road and one with a broken hitch(but he was hitting the frost heaves at 70mph) the rest one with a flat tire. Otherwise I saw no problems for a TT and maybe an advantage or two for a shorter 26' or so.
We traveled most of the normal paved and unpaved roads with the MH and trailer.
