Put like 10 or 20 gallons in the tank (Whatever you think you might use on the trip plus at least 50% safety cushion) and do not worry about it.. Fill up when you get to the CG so you have full pressure showers and such.

Home is where I park it!

Run with full water on board. Lot of the time when traveling every day. Just run my on board water pump most of the time. Fill water tank as I need it.

Wondered, when boon docking, has anyone used a portable pump and drew water from a fresh lake shore. Have thought of doing that and running it through a "whole house" water filter. We don't drink from the tank and always use a water freshener. Maybe even a purifier if were to draw from a lake. What are your thoughts?

My thoughts are that getting water is not the problem. Dumping it is. At least around here any place you can park near a lake you will have somebody else around to worry about your polluting the lake if you try dumping in a hole somewhere. As I recall the units I have seen all have water tank capacity roughly twice the holding tank capacity so another couple of jerry cans of water should put you at full for one or both holding tanks. That is a whole lot cheaper than a pump and filter setup.

SDCO... I might use the lake water for purposes of cleaning and toilet flush but...since there is always a moment where an accidental use of that water might happen exposing your family or friends to LYSTERIA or ECOLI.... I do not think I would place it in the tank where your fresh water should be held.
