If you want to boondock, but not be completely away from civilization or other campers (for your wife's comfort level) I would look at this site. It has lots of easy ATV trails, is quiet, has spectacular night skies, easy access and a desert setting. Here is my trip report:

I didn't know what it was called, but many years ago when I was a teenager camping in Arizona with my parents and 2 dogs. I learned the hard way and I'll never forget it. When we arrived with our 1959 11' trailer the dogs took off after a jack rabbit. Well It took hours of me holding down one dog at a time while my dad pulled stickers out with pliers. These stickers got all over their legs and when they tried pulling them out they got all inside their mouths and tongues, VERY BAD EXPERIENCE. Thank you I'll keep a short leash on her.

Great write up, thank you so much. I'm thinking we will probably stay in one of the BLM sites on 95 south of Quartzsite? It's about 2.5 hours shorter each way from our house. Plus I mentioned the Gem show, so now that's on her list of must do's. But We might take a ride with just our truck and check out your recommendation. It looks and sounds great. I read on one of the BLM web sites that there was a designated shooting area? Do you or anyone else know can you target shoot in safe places on BLM land in Arizona, if it's not designated?

There are no target practice areas in La Posa, sorry. I can recommend some nice camping areas, tho. You'll want to venture a ways in from the highway and then travel across a few washes to get away from the crowd. The less adventurous park close to the main road. You may want to park your rig temporarily and explore in your truck for the best site.

I'll PM you my contact info.

Well we've been at La Posa west camping area for 2 nights now, went to the gem show and walked around the venders area. This camp is nice but a little to close to the highway for me. Doing a day trip today, heading south on hwy.95 hopefully it will start cooling off a little, 82 yesterday. We have a very private spot for the RV, we'll see what today brings, thinking about driving down to crystal hill and checking that out. I'll keep you posted on what we encounter.

You can get further back from the highway in La Posa South. Your BLM sticker allows you to park in any LTVA in Arizona or California and move from one to another any time you choose.

I'm about 1/2 mile southwest of the dump station.

Well we went down to crystal hill yesterday, talked to an elderly couple who were coming down the mountain. I asked if they found any crystals, they said they had been coming for 50 years and there are none left. Well we went up and over the other side of the hill and got off the main trails and went where it was not easy to walk, real steep and loose rock. But it was worth it. We found some really nice crystals. Found one really nice one growing out of the side of a rock. It was a lot of fun. But if you want to find them you have to get off the trails go where it looks like no one has been, and you will find them. I'm not a rock hound but when you start finding them it's really exciting. Not sure what's up for today. Me and the dog have been up for a while now, enjoying my coffee and watching news.

Yep, that's us. I put up a 10x20’ wind break/dog yard with black mesh tarps. From the dump go across the wash between the water station and dump. Take the far right fork in the road. Then turn right after you cross the next wash. You'll see us on the left before you get to the next road.

If you go past the dump and continue past the maintenance camp you can turn south and cross a fairly gentle wash. Then you can continue South or loop back to the west. We’re camped several washes back and back towards 95.

Well we've been at La Posa west now on our 9th day. We like it. It's great being so far between campers. Spent more money on RV things then I thought I would. We were not able to bring the atv, that would fun here. We went up to Parker and had the best chicken fried steak I've ever had. Went down to the Colarado river and let the dog wash off the dust. Going make another trip to Crystal hill, to look for more crystals. I think I'll buy a new tv antenna for 5th wheel today. It's old and never really worked right. Got to be home a week from today for pre opp appointment, but we will definitely be coming back next year.

This is our second year here. I came much better prepared to enjoy the desert - better TV antenna, windbreak/dog yard, dump barrel, etc. I may have to rent a storage space in Q rather than haul all of desert living stuff north.
