Getting stated in boondocking

Is there a way to learn the basics as to where you can legally dry camp, as well as where it is wise to do so? I'd rather a website or ebook than a printed source.
Walmart and Flying J might be legal, and even welcoming, but not exactly the image I had in mind. I was thinking of something more along the line of a natural setting.

Most National Forests permit (or even encourage) dispersed camping. A few do not permit it, and most have some restrictions as to where it is allowed. Each National Forest has their own rules.

Check here Campground Directory and National Forest Campgrounds for a list of National Forests. Most will have their own web site with thew rules.

All the resources listed above. I particularly like freecampsites.net for finding sites. Many National Forests and most BLM areas will allow boondocking and you can usually find sites by contacting the local office.

I have a fair few posts for first-time boondocking on my blog too if that interests you. For example THIS ONE.
