Everyone has hit the nail on the head pretty good, however it should not take you 4 hours to get from FC to BW, more like 2.5hrs. However, with that said timing is everything. Hit FC early and you will cruise on down, you drag your feet and you could very well run into traffic, escpecially on a weekend.

I was just down in March and it was 2hrs down, 2.5hrs out. BW is at MM14 so be prepaired once you come across sugarloaf, you can pass it if your not carefull.

We are headed back down to BW on Saturday ourselves and like you I will be leaving Friday night, stoping and rising early Saturday morning and beating the traffic.

Have fun..

Casino

Hey all thanks for the Casino suggestion in Miami. It was perfect boondocking. Excellent and felt very safe. Security patrols were constant.
We did not get a chance to make the stops you all suggested as we were on a time crunch to check in at Bluewater. Bluewater Key RV resort has been awesome. Great space right on the water with our own dock to swim, dive and snorkel from as well as a tiki hit with refrig, sink, tv and cable and screened or unscreened. Luxury camping!!We have kayaks and bikes as well.
The ride to Key West was easy and uneventful on a Friday morning in May. I am sure in season would be more of a challenge.

I just overnighted at the Port St. Lucie service area in late April. No problems other than the noise.

Wal Mart in FL City does not allow overnights.

Worldwide Sportsman in Islamorada does not have RV parking.

Did you go down 997 from the casino? If so, what is the status of the reported construction?

Construction Info on 997

That area is a 50 MPH limit that may be slower then that now.
It is only a 7 mile stretch of 997 starting 1/10 mile South of the Casino.

I did not know about no parking at the FC Walmart. Seems like we saw campers there from the turnpike. Might have been just shopping or it was not Walmart's lot we were seeing.

It's tough finding a parking place for a car at Worldwide Sportsman so I can understand that.

You can't see the "NO overnight Parking" signs in the parking lot from the turnpike either.

Always a lot of RVers in the last Walmart before entering the Key's.
Florida City is the last chance to stock up a RV at a Walmart.
NO more Walmart's SW of there to the end of US 1.

We saw a sign in Key West that said "You are closer to Cuba than a Walmart".

We stop at the BJs in FC to stock up and make a couple trips each winter there. Grocery prices are a tough to handle in the Keys. I can understand it though. Not easy shipping anything there.

997 Construction

Steve

We did not go down 997. We went back to the Tnpk. We wanted to get down to BW by 2.

By the way we did make it on and off the keys in 2.5 hrs on a Friday morning in and Thursday morning out. Smooth and easy!

Our first experience to the Keys and Bluewater was a 10!

Thanks all for all the tips. We are newbies and very excited for our next adventure. Most likely the Savannah area and then the panhandle!

Over night parking in the Keys

Be prepared to pay a hefty fine if you try to pull off the road for the night once you hit the Keys. There are signs all up and down US1 warning you. I guess if one did it we all would do it and the side of the highway would look like one long RV park! Fortunately for us my husband is retired Army and we stay at the NAS Key West-Sigsbee rv park for the winter. No better place to be IMHO
