I have a 5er with 2 sams club 6 volt gc batts. the 105 min.(small batt box) 1 120 watt panel. adding 2 more same size batts. and another 120 panel. I use a xrantrex 400 watt prue sine to run a 22'' lcd & sat. receiver,(works good) limited furnace(wave 6) lights, water pump etc. Use 2000 honda , coffee, toaster,(use breakfast, supper) bought a xrantrex 40 amp 4 stage batt. charger (close out $100.00 listed for $400.00) can buy batt. temp.& remote panel $65.00 on line. Can I use this to replace the convertor/charger that came with old 5er,or am I missing some information? Any information would be helpful. You cant believe how long this takes when you can only hunt & peck!!!! If this is not a good fit I can return for full refund. Thanks

Could you post the model number of the Xantrex charger. That will help determine if it is just a charger or converter/charger.

John, the charger is a True Charge multi-stage battery charger TC40+. Thanks to both of you for your response.

According to the user manual, it provides either a 3 step charge, a 2 step charge or a fixed voltage mode(13.5V). "The fixed voltage mode is meant to be used as a power supply or battery eliminator". So, the answer is yes, it can replace your old converter/charger, and it appears to me that it would do a nice job, with all it's features. (assuming you have your six volt batteries connected in series in a 12V system)

Well.. I don't know what converter/charger came with the original but I do have a few facts
Those six volt golf car batteries can be charged at a max rate of between 60 and 70 amps (That's for each battery, or for two batteries in series) so if you have two pair you can hit 'em with 120-140 amps and not damage the batteries any (assuming they are run down a bit of course)
So.. your 40 amp Xantrex will seriously baby them (Slower recharges, Up to a point (About 25 amps in this case) are usually better)
And it's a 1st class charger
So, unless your existing charger is something like a Progressive Dynamics 9280.. Yes, you can replace it with the Xantrex.
The two factors are: Single stage/multiple stage (Single stage REPLACE IT!)
Capacity: 20 amp replace, 30 amp replace 40 amp, multi-stage, no advantage, 60 or 80 amp, the existing will recharge faster)
