Highway 395 in California

Hello,

We are getting ready to travel Highway 395 in California and are looking for any nice, quiet boondocking spots between Barstow and Bishop. Any recommendations? We will be staying one night in the spot, on our way further north.

Both red rock canyon on 14 and the trona pinnacles on 178 outside ridgecrest are nice for boondocking. There are size limitations red rocks but pinnacles is wide open.

At Kramer Junction which is the intersection of Highway 58 and Highway 395 on the SE Corner behind the AM/PM which is a quarter mile east of the intersection is a large open area that I have stayed in for a number of years when traveling through the area. I usually park in the rear of this place and it is pretty quiet. I've never had a problem there, and you can't beat the price.

Google search Inyo County Camping and you'll see they are scattered all the way from Lone Pine to Bishop not free but real cheap.

I love Red Rock Canyon during the sunrise. Would always plan my runs between Sylmar and Boise to put me in the canyon during that time.

you didn't say what kind of rig you have, but there are tons of BLM and county campgrounds along the route. I have a 33' class A and it fits at most places. Bigger than that probably not so much.

other spots - fossil falls north of Ridgecrest, sage flat, the abandoned airfield on the east side of Manzanar, many spots in the alabama hills west of Lone Pine. There's a nice cheap campground at Big Pine, BLM and forest service places out of independence.

Stop at the visitor center on the south side of Lone Pine and get one of the maps that show BLM land. While they use those maps to try to keep people out of the backcountry by not showing all the routes, they do delineate between BLM and private land. In the Owens Valley, the LA DWP owns almost all the empty space, and will frequently kick boondockers off if staying overnight. Not so for BLM places.

I personally would recommend Tuttle Creek. It's not expensive....we stay there a lot. If you are a member of the Elks you can stay at the Elks Lodge in Ridgecrest very inexpensive.
Diaz Lake south of Lone Tine is nice and inexpensive also.
