Just bought a "propane based" RV after being used to a primarily gasoline powered toyhauler.

My schedule is 80% dry camping 20% hook up "camping" and with the toyhaulers on board gasoline suplly I could keep a "hot" camp site nearly 24x7 for a week.

A propane Based RV changes how I do this.

My power management strategies are now fundamentally different and I need to invest in an "extend a stay" thing and some spare cylinders to bring along, and I ll take advantage of having a real inverter vs just a converter, but its all changed just enough for me I feel I could use some tips.

To you guys that use them- what is your carrying container of choice for additional propane? I know the cylinders come in different sizes, but which do you prefer and how do you store them while moving.

I may have a propane conversion kit put on my honda 2K as I dont need a 6300 watt genny for "hanging out".

Or I may just bring my 5 gallon extended gas tank vs paying for all the switchover pieces.

Thoughts?

Thanks guys!

Uncle Dave

I think the most convenient size is the 20#. There are brackets available for hold down and they would also be easy to fabricate. Maybe you could add another mounted vehicle type tank. Continuing to use your gas powered generator would relieve some of the propane demand and allow more versatility. This really won't be any different than the gas or diesel powered RV, still using the same appliances. The only difference is that they all draw from the vehicle tank.

IMO your last sentence is the best, practical option. I carry a gas genset to power our 5er, and a 5G gas safety can.

I think you are right Ray.

I have a set of propane tank shipping "stabilizers" that you put the tank in and it stops them from moving around but its more meant for a backseat/truck than RV storage bins- I wish I could find more.

As much as I dont want too - I think Im going to have to screw around with three fuel types as propane mods and extra tanks are much less efficient from an energy density storage standpoint.

The "real" answer is an Onan RV QD 6000 but at 7500 plus install I think Ill pass for now.

Still the though of running the 2K off an extend a stay is interesting.
