Might be safer to stop and rest in Jawbone Canyon right at the entrance or somewhere in Mojave. Not in Crimedale!

We ended up staying overnight at Walmart in Palmdale. The staff were very nice, aside from traffic noise, it was uneventful.

Camping in PALMDALE

I lived there for 30+ years before moving to God's country in Tennessee (like Moses-Desert to the Promised Land)

WalMarts are free but usually noisy, Palmdale's right off the freeway. There are a couple of campsites 20 miles south in Crown Valley that are more convenient and quiet. Most free sites in CA are worth just that.
