S. Dakota & Montana

We like boondocking and are heading into unknown territory in July. Looking for a few nights of quiet. Hope some will share a few spots with us. We have to be careful with a 42ftr. Thanks

Check out this site for free camping. We've found some really nice spots on it.

Nice site, but it looks like it should be 'free or low cost' camping. I looked and found Canyon Ferry Lake in MT which is a great place to boondock but does have a low camping fee (half price with Golden Age). We spent 6 nights at the Silos Rec Area there and would gladly stayed longer but had reservations for St Mary's CG in Glacier.

Check out US Forest Service

US Forest Service

Pick a state, then recreation, then camping and cabins, then RV camping or dispersed camping

Silos Rec Area is appx 7 miles north of Townsend, MT. There are several CG's at Canyon Ferry Lake and this is one of the better ones. It is down past the KOA (the dump station is at KOA as they have some kind of arrangement, appx $4 or so to dump). There is one other CG that I would say is better, but it is further off of US-287 and across the dam. The CG's are the back side are pretty remote, we drove past but not into them. Silos is an easy drive to / from Townsend and less than an hour from Helena (Walmart, etc.). Most of the sites are to the right of the boat launch and water is available there near the host site. There are also a couple of sites just past of and left of the boat launch (see pic, has parked trucks behind us, 200+' or so). That was we were right on the lake. Quiet during the week so we pretty much had our choice of sites. It did get busy on the weekend, but sites were still available. You might even see some pelicans there. Beware the CG's in / near Townsend itself, trains run like you would not believe, no peace and quiet to be had. We were quite a ways from the tracks at Silos and there are no crossings nearby, so no train whistles to be heard. Loved it.
